NES FAQ completion project.
From: ASchultz
| Posted: 5/24/2004 1:13:39 PM | Message Detail
I'm wondering about a proposed project to complete FAQs for every single NES game listed on GameFAQs--or at least the English language ones. Anybody remember this? Want to pitch in? Would anyone find a web site/page listing what guides are completed, and how well? I know there's a request list, which is useful, but if people actively took roles and stepped up to write for certain games, things could really get done.
For instance, I'd list if a page has a full- or part-circle FAQ and also if that FAQ seems good enough. There'll also be a mention of if the FAQ is from a different system, etc., along with a list of what needs to be done.
Maybe people could sign up for a certain game and I could bug them if they take too long to write for it :)...unfortunately I'm not good with dynamic web pages, but maybe I could start the idea and someone with that expertise could handle the last bit, or better yet, field a complete attempted list for the GameBoy or Genesis systems--as I had suggested to me over AIM.
Anybody interested in this? I know GameFAQs is close to getting guides for every NES game and maybe we can finish the job or pull other people into it.

The majority that need to be done are in japanese. Slow work that is. Fail this probably will. Talking like Yoda I am.

i'm interested. the next walkthrough i was planning on doing was crystal mines, krazy kreatures, and finishing my menace beach one anyway. i have a lot of the real carts so it isn't a problem to faq them over the summer. you can put me down for crystal mines to be done.

I remember the project, however, it never fared well. Some games out there are dead boring, and it truly takes ounces of energy just to get "in" to them.

Wow, cool, four posts already. I think there's a problem with games being in Japanese as most writers here do seem to be native English speakers :P. But I think that if people can get together and say, okay, let's knock this game off, some games could be covered when otherwise they might not have. I'll keep people posted.
As for my part I think I can write for Gauntlet II and Mendel Palace. I'll post a webpage link when something cohesive is written up.

i don't know how much of a walkthrough can be done for gauntlet 2. i'm pretty sure it never ends, and the levels are random. maybe a strategy guide?

Gauntlet 2 has infinite random levels. I'll just map out what I can find and try to look for the rest of the maps in memory. I'll put out a line saying, if anyone runs across a map not seen yet they can contact me. The maps can be extracted from save states.

Well, I guess that since the NES is almost completely covered, and it's a bit more popular, we might want to start on that first. I don't know if I'd have the energy to do something bigger. But it would be cool to cover all the games.
Dan--good to have you aboard--assuming this project gets flying. You've already done nice work with Snake Rattle N Roll.
I'll give myself until the end of Memorial Day weekend to actually do something. I should have the time then. Meanwhile anyone else who might be interested--feel free to post here. It'll be great motivation.

Wow, Schultz, thanks for the compliment! This project will definitely get flying, now that we have Brian, Trace, you, and myself involved. Not to mention the other posters in the topic. We should be able to make excellent headway, and quite possibly complete the NES section.
I have already been looking around, kind of, and have come up with a few I wouldn't mind tackling, such as:
Mickey's Adventures in Numberland
Mickey's Safari in Letterland
P.O.W.
One of the Mickey's has a FAQ, but I seem to remember it wasn't the best quality. It's good to see the community come together for something like this. I am thoroughly excited about this project.

I can only try my best. As you can see, earlier this year (before the hiatus), I tried hitting up some NES titles myself. Got 3 (4 with Lone Ranger soon to be, if not already, posted) done since the New Year. Maybe I'll bump into more as I go along.

I'm glad to finally see a project like this. It would be nice to see a total of how many requests there are for each platform at the top of each listing [as there used to be something similar a few years back].
I usually check out the NES request list when I'm between projects to see if there's something I feel like doing, so I may end up doing some more to help out.

Yeah SNES would also make a good project, I'm in the middle of compiling a TXT list of all the NES games without complete FAQs at the moment.
I'll link to it when it's done and someone can put it on a site.

You should make a list of every NES game that needs a complete FAQ, meaning that you would have to check most of the games to see if they have a complete FAQ or not. Then, put the list on a website and let the FAQers pick the games and you can assign them in that list. That would be really helpful.

That was part of the plan, although I didn't articulate it. I was thinking full circle guides for all games. I also think some full circle guides could be fleshed out, but that is more subjective. I could get a small script to check each NES page for full circles, and I have some simple color code scheme arranged to describe the games briefly, but that will need to get done tomorrow.
As for games having half-baked guides--I'm all for writing a better one.
Devin, I think the SNES list would be great, too. But I think we might want to start a bit smaller first, to see how things go, and have a blueprint for other systems. I just stated NES because it seemed to have relatively few games and a lot of fans, still. Some other systems have fewer games but less fan base(i.e. Intellivision) and others have more games but about the same fan base. Plus I'm not very well versed in SNES so I stuck to what I knew.
There are other points worth addressing, but I'm very tired right now and will look into this tomorrow. Along with a first draft of a sample page or maybe even sample pages. I'm favorably surprised at the reaction so far.
The only immediate problem I see cropping up is the subjectivity of if a full circle guide really deserves it.
Also with regard to maintaining the website perhaps someone with knowledge of PHP/ASP could be a big help. We could have the basic info in a database and update it there as I understand it.

Some other systems have fewer games but less fan base(i.e. Intellivision) and others have more games but about the same fan base. Plus I'm not very well versed in SNES so I stuck to what I knew.
The reason I suggested SNES was because after looking at the NES Request List numerous times in the past, many of those games are way too hard for most of us to cover. A small portion of this group can even barely read Japanese (the language many of these games left over are), which makes it a pain to even play them. Not to mention that a bunch of these games just plain suck. I figured with the SNES, there would be more interesting games, and many easier ones to write for (better technology, more translation patches available, etc.).
I can be considered for many system's games, actually. Don't ask me how/why, but I can help if needed. That's why I look around on the Request Lists every so often, to see if anything I'd like to cover comes up.
A problem I have with covering RL games though, is that I really don't like going for games that are REALLY short. That's why if you look at the NES games I covered (except Time Zone), they all have some sort of substance and involve more than 20 minutes to play it through. I guess that's me; maybe others here can and will pick up the games I'd opt out of. Perhaps it would better suit them anyway. :P

Wow, thanks for posting that text list, Dan. I think that you'll give me a great starting point in terms of writing stuff up. I also wouldn't mind having people drop NES-specific progress reports in this topic.

Yea, wtp, I emailed you about it. If there's already a complete one, never mind.

Vic - Well, yeah, since there's a complete one out there, I doubt you would want to do a FAQ for it now. Oh well
