NES FAQ Completion Project: Part 11
Woohoo! This is the 11th edition of the NES Completion Project! The project was started by Andrew Schultz, way back in May 2004, and has been going strong for all these years. The aim is to create a complete FAQ for every NES game. The current completion stats for the NES (based on GameFAQs data): ALL: 1367 / 1560 (87%) North America: 759 / 760 (99%) Japan: 871 / 1053 (82%) Europe: 323 / 324 (99%) Europe game left: War in the Gulf. North America game left: The Adventures of Gilligan's Island Pretty impressive stuff. :D I'm a late comer to this party and really only got involved due to my friend (thanks a lot Saikyo Mog :p) distracting me from playing new games by telling me about new translations for some really good (and really crappy - Mirai Shinwa Jarvas...) NES RPGs. I never played the original system, but that doesn't matter. Anyone can join in. :) See here for details of all the games covered since the project began, and all the Japanese ones left to do. http://faqs.retronintendo.com/nes/stats.html --- I don't remember when I put a monkey on this palmtree... (Dream Master) |
Here's the link for the home page of Project site: http://faqs.retronintendo.com/ How are you doing in Dream Master? Just curious. Since you mentioned Mirai Shinwa Jarvis, do you plan on FAQing that any time soon? :) --- Don't **** with Da Hui |
Oh thanks, just noticed I'd linked the stats page and there's no link from that. :) Yeah, DM maps are all done now, and now I've just got to finish the walkthrough. And no,I won't do MSJ. I tried and tried and got friends to try too it too, but I couldn't find a way to progress much past the first major area despite having access to a Japanese site about the game. I've still got the notes I did if you're interested. --- I don't remember when I put a monkey on this palmtree... (Dream Master) |
I should add a handful of VERY useful resources for tackling the remaining Famicom (JP) games: http://www.ne.jp/asahi/oroti/famicom/FKL01.html http://www25.atwiki.jp/famicomall/pages/121.html http://www.saturn.dti.ne.jp/~dastard/azito.htm http://www.nicovideo.jp (requires registration, has videos playthroughs of many games) There is still a LOT of information available for the games yet to be covered. A lot of full walkthroughs and stuff (in Japanese of course, but you can use Google Translate on the URLs to make them readable). The best approach is to search for the game title in Google using the Japanese text. That's how you'll find the more obscure hiding places for useful information. If you need assistance with any sort of translations or other help, feel free to ask in the topic and someone will be able to help! :) After today's update, we will be left with an impressive 197 games remaining to cover. At last below the 200 mark, this should hopefully be inspiring to others to continue with the project... --- Devin Morgan | CRP #3579 NES FAQ Completion Project: http://faqs.retronintendo.com |
Oh also, topic #10 has been archived on the project site. Rey provided a lot of useful links towards the second half of the topic, so feel free to look back and grab them if you want! --- Devin Morgan | CRP #3579 NES FAQ Completion Project: http://faqs.retronintendo.com |
I just wanted to say congrats for finishing the last topic, and the work that's being done is great! Keep up the great work guys. --- Everyone loves a Rubber Ducky. |
I`m just curious to find out who will tackle Mouryou Senki Madara. :D --- You'll laugh, you'll cry and you will never want to go to sleep again. --jollzoffire about Dragon Quest VII |
So, I've restarted Satsui no Kaisou. I want to try and complete this by myself again but if I get game over on the final chapter again I'll have to try for a nico video or something. Other games in limbo (not claimed): * Osomatsu-Kun * Namco Classic 2 * Kujaku Ou II * Mahjong Taisen |
Otaku no Seiza looks like it wouldn't be that bad of a game. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be all that much information available on it. :/ --- Devin Morgan | CRP #3579 NES FAQ Completion Project: http://faqs.retronintendo.com |
Yes it does look pretty cool, I only read through this guy's clearance once: http://trernoth.cool.ne.jp/game/retro/otaku_no_seiza/index.html Too bad it's not more well known. |
All maps for Dream Master are finished and the walkthrough has been posted, although currently it's at 0.5 done. ReyVGM if you're around, I wonder if you had any ideas about how the luck stat changes? I've listed a few possibilities in the game basics section if you'd give that a glance, but so far I've not been able to come up with a answer, and aishsha didn't know either. Thanks. :) http://www.gamefaqs.com/nes/580594-dream-master/faqs/60830 --- I don't remember when I put a monkey on this palmtree... (Dream Master) |
Oh man, way to be inconsistent :D Dream 2: Pyramid Map (GIF) 08/22/10 threetimes 1.0 63K Dream 3 - Drain Forest (GIF) *new* 09/06/10 threetimes 1.0 39K Dream 3: Vampire Castle Map (PNG) |
Problem reports ahoy! ;) --- Devin Morgan | CRP #3579 NES FAQ Completion Project: http://faqs.retronintendo.com |
Er...inconsistent in terms of what exactly? Date, file size, file type, or title? --- I don't remember when I put a monkey on this palmtree... (Dream Master) |
Title and file type, by the looks of it. Note the "-" for Drain Forest, but ":" for the others... --- Devin Morgan | CRP #3579 NES FAQ Completion Project: http://faqs.retronintendo.com |
I see. Thanks. :) --- I don't remember when I put a monkey on this palmtree... (Dream Master) |
threetimes: Jarvas is getting translated by the same team that did Dream Master. It should be out sometime this year (maybe). About Dream Master: I don't know what modifies the luck either. I would assume that playing correctly would increase it. Meaning: don't fall into any traps and attack monsters on the correct body part. Also, aishsha wouldn't know because what translators really do is translate the script. They don't play the game (most of the time). The ones that actually play the games are the beta testers (which in this case it's me) and the people that insert the text in the game (Pennywise). The best ones to ask questions about the game are the beta testers or the hacker. The hacker usually knows "how the games work", so they could provide an answer. Assuming they looked into it of course. |
Odino: Now that Grand Master has been translated, are you planning on updating your FAQ regarding the story variations the game has? Here they are: -If you go to the Pyramid level before the Cave level, your sister will die. -If you go to the Cave level before the Pyramid level, your sister will live. None of this affects the outcome of the game though. -If you go to the Tower level before the Cave level, Freia (Medusa) will die. This will trigger the bad ending once you get to the last level. -If you go to the Cave level first and speak to Terry there and then go to the Tower level, Freia will live. This will let you enter the very last stage and get the good ending. -If you go to the Castle level before talking to Terry in the Cave level, he will appear and talk to you. This doesn't affect the outcome of the game though. There's also some dialogue I couldn't find where Freia (Medusa) tells you that the "Devil is up ahead" and that "you can't use magic in his chambers". I assume you get that line somewhere on the last level, but I wasn't able to trigger it no matter which stages I beat first or last. |
Or I could just include your info with credit given? :) Thanks. I don't have much time to replay older games, your Cleopatra suggestions are still pending in my inbox. |
Well, if you are going to paste the info, then let me be a bit more abundant: -If you go to the Pyramid level before the Cave level, your sister (Tsuria, the boss) will die. -If you go to the Cave level before the Pyramid level, Tsuria will live. None of this affects the outcome of the game though. This is due to the fact that the Cave Level's boss tells you that your sister is in the Pyramid. If you don't trigger that event first, then she dies. -If you go to the Tower level before talking to Terry in the Cave level, Freia (Medusa, Terry's sister, the boss) will die. This will trigger the bad ending once you get to the end of the last level. -If you go to the Cave level first and speak to Terry there and then go to the Tower level, Freia will live. This will let you enter the very last stage and get the good ending. This is due to the fact that the dying Terry in the cave level asks you to save his sister. If you don't trigger that event first, then she dies. -If you beat the Castle level before talking to Terry in the Cave level, he will appear and talk to you. This doesn't affect the outcome of the game though. |

ReyVGM Thanks for that information. (But playing successfully doesn't seem to be the basis for luck: I've even had it increase by a lot after bumping into walls and running away, and decreasing when I clear lots of fog with no bumping and get charged attacks on the weak point. Very odd. :D) --- I don't remember when I put a monkey on this palmtree... (Dream Master) |
Games: sorry, it's just NES games are so old and the story is so incredibly basic that I didn't consider them spoilers. Besides, the game doesn't hide anything I mentioned there. None of it is a secret. The reason why no one was sure of what to do or not do was because the game was in Japanese. |
We regulary discuss NES endings here, I think that's something that comes with the topic. |
Dream Master walkthrough is finished, but I think a FAQ would have benefited from that new formatting for all the puzzles. A step too far for me, though. --- I don't remember when I put a monkey on this palmtree... (Dream Master) |
Hate to see this thread stagnating like this. Must be because of school starting up or is the lack of anything really easy to FAQ? --- American NES games left to beat: 3 Last 3 NES games beaten: Romance of the Three Kingdoms II, Nobunaga's Ambition II and Gemfire [Updated 7/21/10] |
Maybe a little of both? I'm personally very busy at work these last few weeks. I have free time at home, sure, but I'm filling my time doing other things not involving being on the computer. :) --- Devin Morgan | CRP #3579 NES FAQ Completion Project: http://faqs.retronintendo.com |
There are other things to do other than being on a computer?! I haven't had enough time with school taking up most of my time to work on my non-NES FAQs so I definitely won't have time to contribute to this project. Hopefully with all this work early in the semester, it means I'll be more free towards the end of the semester. --- Don't **** with Da Hui |

Same thing as jelly soup. Work, and I bought a 360 that's been eating up my time. I'm almost done with Aero and then I get working on those NES faqs I was going to write. ;) |
Mine is more because of a lack of focus/free time. Most of the guides I have done since April has been guides that could be completed within a couple of days because I have little concentration time. Speaking of which, Da Hui, please may I use your "area map" that I saw in your Daiku no Gen San guide? I think it would be informative for my Youkai Club guide. --- Sign for System Requirements/Recommendations for games: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=7&topic=53203289 |
Baltron has been posted by me. |
That map's so basic you don't even have to ask, just use it. --- Don't **** with Da Hui |
Baltron is so tiny. Those other 3 shmups are still rather "easy" compared to other unfaqed games. Dezaemon, Fighbird, Galg (and War in the Gulf if it ever surfaces). |
isn't Dezaemon a make-your-own-shmup --- Wer wagt, gewinnt. |
It has a default mode too iirc. |
Yes, and I would hardly consider it complete without an FAQ on the make-your-own-shmup mode. --- Wer wagt, gewinnt. |
Yeah but isn't that mainly just explaining the features, like in a manual? |
I think he is referring more to the fact that something like that should not be really half-assed, so unless there is very little depth to the system it should be explained in detail. I have done several of the shmups for the system in the past (as well as a few for the GameBoy), so if I ever get bored of my GameBoy binge I may pick off one (or all) of those games if they are not done by then. --- Wish Upon a Darkstar |
The Japanese/USA versions of Rainbow Island are different from the Euro version. I submitted a request to separate them. I'm sure the USA FAQs still apply to the game, but considering the Euro version is almost an exact port of the Arcade version, it would be best if whoever tries to FAQ it checks it first. |
Wow Rey, I never noticed that about Rainbow Islands having 2 different versions. I assume the endings are as different as the games are? --- American NES games left to beat: 3 Last 3 NES games beaten: Romance of the Three Kingdoms II, Nobunaga's Ambition II and Gemfire [Updated 7/21/10] |
Rey, what exactly are these differences to warrant a split? >_> --- Devin Morgan | CRP #3579 NES FAQ Completion Project: http://faqs.retronintendo.com |
I never noticed that either, they do have a different product code actually. I'm kind of surprised the US version is even based on the Japanese game after 3 years since its release there. |
Adam: haven't checked the endings, but the Euro one is much more similar to the Arcade version. The USA/Jpn version probably has a more "japanese-y" ending. Devin Morgan: Well, the Euro version is a close port of the Arcade version. I can't say the same thing about the Jpn/USA versions. The Arcade version has 3 secret levels that get you the good ending, whereas all the home versions have only 1 secret level. I don't know if the Euro NES version has the 3 arcade secret levels or only one. I will check once I play them both. I'm sure the USA version FAQ will work for the Euro one, merely as a reference, but there are indeed differences between the two. Besides, if Maniac Mansion has a separate entry, so should this game :) --- Sign my petition to streamline the Contribution Search Function: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/7-site-suggestions/54661423 |
Ok, I've been playing the Jpn/USA one and yeah, it's completely different from the Arcade version. The Euro version needs a dedicated FAQ. |
Write one, then? >_> --- Devin Morgan | CRP #3579 NES FAQ Completion Project: http://faqs.retronintendo.com |
You overestimate my writing skills :) If I were to make a FAQ for a game like this, the walkthrough would just consist of "Go up and be careful with the enemies along the way". :P |
I just beat the Euro version. The game seems to be worse than the USA version, despite of looking better. I collected all the diamonds and I got no secret levels like the other games. There seems to be only one ending too. I beat it again tomorrow just in case I did something wrong. |
...so basically you had another game added to the list because it doesn't have the secret levels, whereas the other versions do? --- Devin Morgan | CRP #3579 NES FAQ Completion Project: http://faqs.retronintendo.com |
Also, could the guide for the SMS version of the game cover the NES EU version? Just thinking that a cross-link would be a quicker way to cover the game than writing a new guide. --- Sign for System Requirements/Recommendations for games: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=7&topic=53203289 |
