NES FAQ Completion Project, Part 4

AdamL - yeah, I have a copy of the proto ROM...fully translated English version, so no worries about non-translated RPGs there Devin...and ASchultz, I wasn't even aware there was a PC version, but your guide may be of some use, I'll definitely have to keep that in mind while I play it, since this will likely be an "FAQ as I go" type of game. I've heard from a couple people that it wasn't that great, but I played a bit of it earlier and it didn't seem too bad. Really like the music...go go Kemco :) May take me a while though, like I said, I'd like to knock of that LoL guide, but I kinda hit a roadblock...damn alignment-based stairwells :-/ I'll probably take a look at the list again, I wouldn't mind a smaller project to kinda break myself in again...never really was much of a writer, so it couldn't hurt to get some practice in...as it is, whatever guide I post next will only be my third full guide ever!

wizard_666, you must truly be a wizard for your ability to procure the unreleased Dragon Wars ROM. I don't even want to know how you acquired it.

Devin, I'll look into the AIM thing. I've never actually used it (probably the last computer literate person in the world to not use instant messaging), but it would be cool to talk to guys like you, BSulph and Andrew on it. I'll let you know if/when I get hooked up.

Shikinjo is up. I would like to reserve the NES version of Q*Bert which seems very very similar to the Arcade version. That and Egypt too.

The more I look into romhacking the more I realize it'd be tough to do a translation even with somebody, although I sort of see how things link up with my silly little experiments. With all the small stuff I've done it's tough to ramp up to a big project.

But it would be fun to take on NES Magic Candle in the distant future. Does anyone here have any experience? I could do some of the technical work, and I'd be willing to trade proofreading of a few guides, but I don't know what an even trade would be.

Update of Dragons of Flame up, not that it really matters.

Now 5.85% more useful for the maybe one or two people a week who look at it.

Andrew, I still think the coolest thing about rom hacking would be if somebody made some rom hacking program that automatically translated Japanese games. I don't know if it's possible but it would be awesome, and it would definately help this project. I would gladly give $20 to the person who does it.

adaml, it wasn't really all that hard. Just gotta know who to talk to ;) And I had to swear never to distribute the ROM, which I agreed to. And I will NEVER break my word, so don't bother pleading with me :P

Devin, I was looking over your list. I noticed a few games that have already been covered or games that are the US/Japanese equalivent.

Battles of Napoleon = L'Empereur (madmanmike25)
Chinese Kung Fu: Challenge of the Dragon = Challenge of the Dragon (antseezee)
Family Trainer: Manhattan Police = Street Cop
Family Trainer: Aerobics Studio = Dance Aerobics ?
Family Trainer: Jogging Race = Athletic World ?
Freeway Star (Highway Star) = Rad Racer
Hector '87 = Possibly Starship Hector
Hiryu no Ken = Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll (AdamL)
Nobunaga no Yabou: Bushou Fuuunroku = Possibly Nubunaga's Ambition
Royal Blood = Gemfire
Taketa Shingen = Possibly Shingen the Ruler
White Lion Densetsu = Possibly Legend of the White Lion (WLau)

Nice finds, submit those as game data and in the comments write down that they should be crosslinked with said game. I don't think you should post the "possible" duplicates until you know they are though as they might not get accepted.

Actually... Why don't you submit all this so the games in question can be merged. When that's done, I'll update the list, in case things don't match up.

I'll submit them in a bit, I was just bringing it to your attention.

I'll have to find the ROMs of the ones that I'm not sure about.

Devin Morgan | Posted 8/26/2006 12:59:29 AM | message detail
I have removed the following from the incomplete list, being they were actually linked here:

Chinese Kung Fu: Challenge of the Dragon = Challenge of the Dragon (antseezee)
Hiryu no Ken = Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll (AdamL)
Royal Blood = Gemfire
White Lion Densetsu = Possibly Legend of the White Lion (WLau)

Freeway Star isn't even listed here, and after looking up the Japanese name of Rad Racer, it's called Highway Star, not freeway. So I removed that from the incomplete list as well. It's up to you whether or not to submit that as another name for that game, though.

Nobunaga no Yabou: Bushou Fuuunroku = Possibly Nubunaga's Ambition

Technically, that's Nobunaga's Ambition III. So it's a completely different game ;)

The guide currently up for Shingen's not applicable to the project though. Let me know if they're the same when I put out my Shingen guide and I'll have them cross-linked (September most likely).

Challenge of the Dragon, and Chinese Kung Fu aren't necessarily the same. One is a Sachen game and the other is Color Dreams, and they are quite different. It was discussed earlier in this topic, or a previous topic.

List one as Challenge of the Dragon (Sachen) maybe.

"Takeda Shingen 2" & "Shingen the Ruler" are the same game, just like the db says.

There is a guide but it's not complete, though it could count as "strategy guide" if the author would submit it as full. Maybe contact him?

=====

Challenge of the Dragon & Chinese Kung Fu: Challenge of the Dragon

These are indeed different games. I've submitted data changes, hopefully they'll be accepted.
Gemerl | Posted 8/26/2006 4:10:48 PM | message detail
If you want to contact him to that effect regarding the Shingen guide, then go ahead. There'd be absolutely no harm here as I haven't started one myself.

Someone should separate the Japanese Airwolf from the Western Airwolf, seeing as how they're two completely different games. I was actually writing a FAQ for the Japanese Airwolf but I got bored with it.

There's some truth in that, trying...

We'll see about the rest of the data tomorrow (or with the next update).

By the way, Quarterback on the list is John Elway's Quarterback right? Because there is a guide for it. In fact two but one is under "Game Information" for some reason, don't think I have seen that heading before.
NESHQ_dot_com | Posted 8/28/2006 6:06:31 AM | message detail
John Elway's QB shouldn't be on the list. Myself and another gent both wrote FAQs for it...

Devin, I take it you're the one keeping everything up to date...last page I asked to be removed from Big Nose Freaks Out because, well, I couldn't be arsed to play the game...I think you just missed it when you updated after my addition to Dragon Wars, so I just figured I'd mention it again.

Done, there is a new Airwolf (Japan) now. Maybe you'll pick up writing for that game again ;)

Merged:
Hector '87 = Starship Hector
Family Trainer: Manhattan Police = Street Cop

Also you can put me down for King's Quest V, I'll do it once I finally get down to write KQ4 and then when I do one for the PC version of KQ5 at the same time.

Tonight I will post Auto-Upturn, including pics though I had to censor some solutions :) (.)(.) O_o

uh oh

ASchultz: Shikinjo is up. I would like to reserve the NES version of Q*Bert which seems very very similar to the Arcade version. That and Egypt too.

My final merger for now:
Family Trainer: Aerobics Studio = Dance Aerobics

3 new Sachen games added, since there was one of the games from the same cartridge listed already:
* Frog Adventure
* Worm Visitor
* Magical Tower

Auto-Upturn puzzle solutions are up, so now I can link to it with the guide i will post asap.

I just wanted to poke in here quickly (since it's been over 3 months since I posted) and say that I am still working away at Dance Aerobics. Just haven't had as much free time lately as I'd like.
Hope no one else has had the urge to do that and has been moved away due to me being listed there, but, I do plan to finish it up eventually anyway.

Andrew already signed up for Q*Bert a few days ago, so replace my name with his. It must have just been overlooked on the page, I checked there rather than posts from a few days ago.

No harm, and I will be doing Animal Attack Gakuen.

Just wanted to drop in to say thanks to Gemerl for being a good sport--I planned on a big Q*Bert bender this weekend. I guess I've reserved a lot of games and I find them hard to keep track of, but the ones I do...

...anyway, I'd like to reserve Flappy too, depending on if JoLolli, who has a FAQ up, gets around to writing it. I emailed him & no response yet...I'd love to knock off as many puzzle games as possible before the new year.

The_wizard_666, have you ever looked into RAM editing? I looked at WoF Vanna White and it appears the answers are compressed a bit from 8 bytes to 5 and maybe we can extract all the answers--IIRC the other WoFs were much easier for that.

AShultz, I have dabbled in it, but am not exactly a pro...and I rarely emulate games anyway...maybe that's why it takes me so long to gather all the details for a game, or even to beat the games. I've been using the actual cart for that one to get the answers, and writing down the ones I get. If anyone wants to take a peek in the ROM to see what's missing, and forward the list, it'd be greatly appreciated...could make it a full circle and knock it off the list :)
the_wizard_666 | Posted 8/30/2006 7:41:12 PM | message detail
Okay, it got rejected for being incomplete...yet I submitted it as an incomplete FAQ...meh, I'll just wait until I get it completed then...
the_wizard_666 | Posted 8/30/2006 7:52:54 PM | message detail
Okay, sometimes I wish there was an "Edit Post" option...anyway, I should mention that I have been sorting them by puzzle category as opposed to a straight alphabetical list like the other guides are in...so it may very well be impossible to get that information from the ROM itself, although I'm not sure...might entail more work though, if anyone's up to the challenge ;)
pseudo | Posted 8/31/2006 3:19:51 AM | message detail
Another one if anyone wants to submit it.

Family Trainer - Running Stadium = World Class Track Meet / Stadium Events

Also, I give up on Recca. Someone else can take it.
