NES FAQ Completion Project, Part 4

Triwailende | Posted 9/14/2006 4:58:55 PM | message detail
Nice ideas. I've tried lots of different stuff, like matching the EFs in different ways (maybe just not as intended). Still, I can't seem to figure it out. But I won't give up just yet.

Yeah, definitely check this game out for yourself. It was so much fun up to this point.

As for co-ordinates, if the room in the northwest corner is (1,1) then this room is (6,2). Where 6 = x, counted from west to east and 2 = y counted from north to south.
Gemerl | Posted 9/14/2006 5:05:12 PM | message detail
Yeah I might give it a playthrough soon, I'm currently about halfway through Eggerland Mystery so I may start a journey following that.

I haven't played this Lolo game yet. You mean you can choose what room you want to go through, sort of like the dungeons in Zelda? Do they stay cleared once you beat them or do you have to play through them again. Is this for the FDS?

Eggerland - MnF is for the NES, but there are also two Eggerland games for the FDS. It is kinda like always being in a Zelda I dungeon or maybe a maze. In some rooms you find items, like keys and a map, or a person that'll give you advice. Some rooms have multiple exits, while some don't. You can go back to any room you've cleared and they always stay cleared (in other words enemies never reappear but everything else resets to its original position). Later you go on a river rafting trip.
Gemerl | Posted 9/14/2006 8:35:18 PM | message detail
Yeah, this particular brand of Eggerland/Lolo takes place over a large grid. As Triwailende mentioned, rooms are interconnected and you have multiple doors in some rooms. Eggerland 2 on the MSX was the first to implement the grid format iirc.

Some rooms must be, or are much easier to be completed from a certain door. So while you will often get a preview of later levels you cannot always easily complete them.

If you want a quick preview of this type of Eggerland, Eggerland Episode 0 is a 32 room freeware game for Win95. It runs at 256 colours, however.

Revival! Eggerland is currently my Holy Grail. 194 rooms on a grid (as far as I can tell). Immense. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a copy of this, I don't really want to use Amazon Japan either. :(

hmm. that room looks impossible without some item, maybe from another room, or there's some tricky roundabout way to do it that's not obvious.

anyway the gols are spaced too together to block them off with ef's and that won't get you all the way to treasure, and the hf's are in really bad positions. tough....

you said you were stuck on three rooms, could you post the other rooms? maybe there's something you need to get in another room.

---
pseudo | Posted 9/14/2006 10:48:12 PM | message detail
ohh, did you try walking right down the middle of those gols? that worked for 10-5 (?) in lolo 1.

---
Gemerl | Posted 9/14/2006 11:18:04 PM | message detail
That could possibly work pseudo, but you have the Gols separated here by 3 spaces. In Lolo they are separated by 6 spaces. Worth a shot though.

It's a very long shot but I don't see any other way to do it with the layout of that room. I"m going to start playing this game again to figure out that room...

---
Gemerl | Posted 9/15/2006 12:04:08 AM | message detail
That's true I guess, seems like the room offers very few options. Hence why it's so brutal XD. Good luck with it!

I believe Secret Storm = Operation Secret Storm; should be gone with the next update.

And I had a quick glance at the guides from other systems, most of them are very good already and even mention the NES at times, all expect maybe that "Times of Lore" one.

However, I cannot find Terminator 2: The Arcade Game in the db, which makes me think perhaps it doesn't exist?!

This should drop down the incomplete list below 800, though you better check those other guides out as well! ^_^ yay!
pseudo | Posted 9/15/2006 1:50:45 AM | message detail
Odino: I'm almost certain that Secret Storm is the same game as the other one you mentioned, only the less formal name as it's proper title is Operation yadda, yadda AFAIK.

There is a Terminator 2 game on the NES but I'm not sure about the "arcade game" part.

---
pseudo | Posted 9/15/2006 2:24:54 AM | message detail
Bill Elliot NASCAR = NASCAR Challenge

This is the same game as well as the having the same title problem as Secret Scout. The proper title is Bill Elliot's NASCAR Challenge. I'm not sure if there's a Euro or Jpn version called nascar challenge though.

About the Vs. series. I think these should at least be removed from the project because they are arcade games played on the Uni/Dual System machines. And there are a bunch of them missing from the dp - there are 15 or so different ones besides excitebike.

---
odino | Posted 9/15/2006 9:26:10 AM | message detail
More to remove eh? Nice.

I have noticed "Hokuto no Ken" is missing from the list of incomplete though.
Triwailende | Posted 9/15/2006 5:05:37 PM | message detail
I've also been looking for Revival Eggerland, but without any luck. Good luck finding it!

I'm not stuck on any other room besides this one. What I said was that I remember some other rooms that gave me a real headache before I cleared them and now I've forgotten how to solve them. That is going to be a problem for the guide, but not too troublesome though.

It's not possible to walk straight in the middle, you'll always be hit by fire. But if you take half a step right/left you'll be fast enough to avoid one side.
Gemerl | Posted 9/15/2006 6:02:19 PM | message detail
I'm beginning to think it has something to do with temptin the Gols to fire, then moving past them 2 at a time while their fire is still onscreen.

I tested in Ep 0 but without much success.

Operation Wolf is NOT easy without the original cartridge and a light gun.

So the ROM is freaken unreally hard to beat.

Triwailende | Posted 9/16/2006 6:32:11 AM | message detail
I was thinking the same and after trying a couple of theories I finally beat that room yesterday!!

You need to be 1.5 squares away from the Gol, move up to it, let it fire, move down and then move 1 square closer to it. Move two squares up to the next Gol (you should 1.5 squares away from it), let it fire, move down and so on. Sorry if it makes no sense... Also I think the fireballs are slower in this game, or maybe I'm thinking of the FDS games.
Gemerl | Posted 9/16/2006 8:21:15 AM | message detail
Congrats!

That was probably one of the most cruel looking Egger stages I've ever seen, and it was fun trying to figure it out with you folks. =)

Anyone seen 'Night Raider'? It's the EU title of 'Dive Bomber' but there is no NES version.

It would be nice to mark confirmed unreleased titles (w/o proto) with an * because everytime I check the list I wonder what's up with some games.

T-2 arcade must be a mistake.
NASCAR only has one title now, thanks for pointing that out earlier pseudo.

odino - I'd like to do that. If you'd be willing to compile the list of cancelled games as listed on GameFAQs, I'd be happy to distinguish those on the incomplete game list. :)

Prototypes of unreleased games that have been dumped:

Bashi Bazook: Morphoid Masher (the NA version of Bio Senshi Dan)
California Raisins: The Grape Escape
Crackout (NA version; I suspect this is where that Blockout entry came from)
Cross Fire (NA version)
Drac's Night Out
Earthbound (NA version of Mother)
Escape from Atlantis (two protos)
Final Fantasy II (NA version)
Free Fall (standalone; was released in a modified form with Sunday Funday)
Hero Quest
Hit the Ice
Lethal Weapon (PAL version)
Pescatore
Playbox BASIC (? Wouldn't really be a game I guess)
Robocop vs. the Terminator
Secret Ties
Squashed (NA version of Ninja Jajamaru: Ginga Daisakusen)
Sunman
Taro's Quest (NA version of Jajamaru Ninpou Chou)
Time Diver Eon Man (pirates released this as Time Diver Avenger)

Other prototype dumps have been mentioned (Xybots comes to mind), but they're nowhere to be seen on GoodNES 3.10 (new as of a few months ago). I also suspect that Bruce Lee Lives may have been released in the Middle East (of all places) as "The Dragon." It's definitely a Bruce Lee game of unusually high quality for these Asian gray-market releases.

Rob
odino | Posted 9/17/2006 1:38:54 PM | message detail
sorry I forgot about those two
BASIC is an app, I tried it for like 2 seconds :)

Once Devin gets around to edit the list I'll remove my post to make this more scroll-friendly. There are probably a few more unreleased titles.

Don't forget:
- 'NASCAR Challenge' is gone and 'Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge' is the only one left.
- 'Secret Storm' is gone.
- 'Hokuto no Ken' is missing from the list (unless I'm missing something)

More updates when CJayC goes back to work...

I'm certain Hokuto used to have a FAQ, but must have been removed. I've been considering writing a Fist of the North Star guide for a while so I've been searching for Hokuto every now and then.

Unfortunately, the first of the games is also pretty miserable.

There are several protos from the list Pluvius provided that are also dumped, but not released. If I ever get more than an ounce of motivation I will be reviewing Thomas the Tank Engine. My kids have actually taken an interest in the videos, so that just might be the motivation I need to get it done.

Haven't been around for a bit. Howdy.

Triwailende: Nice job on figuring out that room.

Odino: I'd love to see Elite get FAQ'd because I'm stuck in one part of the game.

the_wizard_666: I hope that Airball gets dumped. It looks like an interesting game.

6 in 1 (caltron/myriad) are virtually the same game. When someone writes a guide for it you could probably delete both of them from the list. I don't think it would too hard to write for since most (all?) of those games are clones of other NES/Gameboy games: Balloon Fight, Boxxle, Space Harrier... I forget the other ones.

An update for Atlantis no Nazo is going to be submitted soon. Does anyone have a concrete strategy for finishing the final room of this game? All I have is basic ideas and a few tips.

Looking into a few other games; wondering if anyone has tried them before.

Labyrinth, Spelunker 2, Arkanoid 2.

---
Gemerl | Posted 9/19/2006 12:36:34 AM | message detail
Pseudo, Labyrinth is based on the movie by the same name (great movie btw). It's kind of odd, and definitely needs a FAQ.

IIRC, the whole game is on one timer so a definite time savvy strategy would be helpful for this title. I've only played as far as the second screen which is a maze.

pseudo: I've beaten all three of them. I don't remember any of them being all that difficult with savestates; Arkanoid 2 is a lot more forgiving than the original due to its strong powerups, three-foot falls don't kill you in Spelunker 2, and Labyrinth only has a couple of particularly annoying mazes. Of interest is that Arkanoid 2 allows you to choose between two maps for every level except for the boss levels and a couple of others (depending on whether you leave the previous level left or right), and Spelunker 2 has a few different endings depending on your Holy level at the end as well as some hidden bonus weapon powerups.

On the subject of maze games, there was a first-person one translated not long ago called Dai Meiro: Meikyu no Tatsujin ("Great Maze: Master of the Maze"). It's in the GameFAQs database as "Daimeiro."

Gemerl: Yep, I remember the movie, that's the main reason I D/L the rom. =)

I got to the third maze (a hedge maze) and I couldn't find my way out of it because the screen wrapped somewhere. I didn't feel like figuring it out at the time. I had a key and a few other items that I didn't know how or where to use them.

AdamL: I did watch it before. That movie is pretty awesome, especially the final level.

Just noticed Chase HQ is actually Taito Chase H.Q. and was released.

I recommend we remove Mappy, ASchultz links a great Arcade version to it. Unless he's willing to add a small "NES version differences" section to the guide maybe?!

"The Dragon" is certainly not Bruce Lee Lives, as that was supposed to be a C64 port. Also it uses sprites from Mortal Kombat :)

Trying to knock some cheap Sachen games off the list.

Big changes are a-coming, unfortunately the data queue isn't getting cleared lately, 20% of those must be my submissions.
ASchultz | Posted 9/21/2006 3:26:45 PM | message detail
pseudo--it's teleports in the hedge maze. I managed to get the key in the 3rd maze and am stuck there at the moment. I think a game like this really needs graphical mazes. But I'll have to rewrite the one I have a bit. Thank goodness for save states and cheat codes(I've frozen my time at way too much left.)

Odino, I may pick off Mappy at some time. I'd thought about it but have so much else I wanted to do(Crystal Mines, Labyrinth, Joshua) that it might be overload. But why not. I think that would be the easiest way for it to get done, if not the soonest.

Ok fair enough, however, there isn't much extra to be gained from ignoring the fact that there are great guides to some games like Q*Bert and Mappy already. Q*Bert was taken off the list. Mappy might only require a small section for the NES controls and then it's good to go.

I once tried to submit some guides to the Amiga but they were all rejected for being the same as the PC more or less. It's not possible from the site's POV, to submit a new NES guide unless it's completely rewritten.

Having said all that, I think Mappy is one of the only linked guides that is worth "ignoring".

Though I'd like to hear more from you and others, if a pure NES version would be nice at some point.
