NES FAQ Completion Project, Part 5

odino | Posted 4/11/2007 6:35:40 AM | message detail
Hey if you only plan on making one FAQ in the next couple of years you might as well make it Piano Teaching. ;) But check your e-mail first before you decide.

A complete walkthrough, and level nine map, have been submitted for Transformers: Convoy no Nazo. There's another game that can be checked off the list.

I can also report a complete guide: Dai Meiro is finally done.

I'll also be done with Business Wars and Erika to Satoru no Yume Bouken soon. I only mention this because I am updating my old guides and thus Devin can quickly see which one is actually new ;)

NES Play Action Football was actually claimed by chessjerk, did you try to email him about his progress? It's been a while since then though, and a while since he's made a new FAQ.

I finally managed to finish my Time Diver: Eon Man FAQ/Walkthrough. It took a while due to a lot of distractions lately. I'm not sure if I'll have much time to FAQ again for a bit.

By the way, this topic looks like it's coming to an end. Any idea who's going to post the next project topic?

Wrote up a quick FAQ/Walkthrough for Kaiketsu Yancha Maru 2: Karakuri Land. I highly suggest the sequel to smoebody else. I really don't want to do it myself but it's actually a really good game that's short so somebody with some time could FAQ it in a few hours at most. I'm just not in the mood for the same type of game again. =P

I might do another one soon, I'll take a look at some of the games that are left, I'm in the mood for another prototype.

Robocop vs Terminator is pretty good, and you seem to know about Gekitotsu Yonku Battle which could get you closer to that "all driving games complete" goal ;)

I finished up those two guides I mentioned over the week-end. I'm currently juggling three new ones and they should all be done by next week-end too.
Da Hui | Posted 4/16/2007 1:04:42 PM | message detail
Heh, that driving goal is pretty much done for me. I didn't quite get all of them but I did manage to knock a lot of games off relatively quick because of it. I have what I believe to be all the NES prototype games that have been released so I will check all of those out maybe later tonight.

NFL Football has been completed. Posted to the features section on NES HQ (http://neshq.com/features/nflfootball-faq-100.txt) and to GameFAQs, pending content review.

And ugh, this game is horrible. Glad to be done with it.

Just as a note, I spent some time today updating the Statistics page on the site. I just finished it and I e-mailed the update to Devin. There's also a few more corrections to the site that I would just like to point out in case somebody is interested in these games. The games that need to be added are:

Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy, The
Gemfire
Gold Medal Challenge '92
Klax
Lemmings
Might and Magic
Ms. Pac-Man (Tengen)

And a small correction:

Kung-Fu Heroes -- Half Circle

Those were just some corrections that I noticed while updating the Statistics. I think if somebody has some time they should go over the list one by one to make sure that everything is up to date to make sure that there aren't any more mistakes.

Nice find, I am sure Flintstones was on the list just a while ago. Must have been removed by mistake. That's a good game too.

Gemfire
Klax
Lemmings
Might and Magic

all have guides from another system. Note how Andrew put "Valid for Apple and NES" in M&M.

I might as well try to merge Ms. Pac-Man (Tengen) with the other one...let's see what happens.
Da Hui | Posted 4/17/2007 8:58:22 AM | message detail
Ahh, that might be it, I didn't look at the guides, I just saw that they had a FAQ for a different system.

All updates noted have been added. Also, the stats page has finally been updated, thanks to Da Hui. Granted, it doesn't omit multiple names of the same game (if someone wants to take that task on, feel free to do so), but it still gives a rough idea of where we stand now. :)

Well then make up your mind about what needs to be readded/changed somehow. I only altered the games that were listed in the last 10 posts or so, after investigating each game's FAQ page myself to verify. I don't think I made any mistakes, so prove me wrong.

By update I meant Monday's games. Business Wars, Erika to Satoru no Yume Bouken, Kaiketsu Yancha Maru 2: Karakuri Land.

<rant>

TBH I don't really care if you put those other games back on the list because I for sure won't be writing one for them. I just find it ridiculous to think there needs to be a "new" guide for something like Might and Magic that will actually get anywhere near the greatness of ASchultz's guide, which IS for the NES, only because it is for another system at the same time and happens to be primarily listed there. The only reason for that is because GameFAQs handles it that way and CJay would reject 2 guides that are identical, submitted for two different systems. Now I myself really hate to read a PS2 guide from the Xbox that talks about weirdo buttons, but it's obviously not the case. If a linked guide doesn't fit to that other system it's easy to remove with a contribution problem report so I suggest you get started on those.

Whoops, sorry. I was sick yesterday so I must've forgotten to thoroughly update. *shrug*

As for FAQs for other systems... I totally agree with your stance, and frankly I'd remove them from the list as well. But since it was requested they be readded, I went with it. I mean, there's a reason why we have the "other system" circle on the page. :)

Unless we can unanimously agree that it is time for change. :P

I think it's a good idea that someone who wrote for a game on another system can see how similar it is on the NES, and if it is very similar, they would probably be the best to complete the FAQ. Obviously we can't check things off RIGHT away, but for instance if someone clearly labels the NES differences vs another platform then I think the guide should be registered as completed as such.

For instance controls will be different, and maybe places/tactics that give an easy win/boost might be too as well as the ending.

So in my case Might and Magic would be good. It describes the three above. KLAX might need a bit of work. Rygar on the other hand could not be ported from the Arcade to the NES. Completely different game.

In any case I would guess that anything added would be subject to peer review(i.e. one of us could check that it really does describe what happens in the NES separately and it is clearly demarked as such) before being completed at faqs.retronintendo.com due to the nonstandard nature of the change.

People should still take whatever games they can find, of course. I liked Brian Sulpher's Pooyan FAQ--I wrote for the arcade version. But I think that if someone can rigorously write about the differences between the Arcade and NES versions, and they are available to verify a game is very similar across platforms, then retyping the guide is not very useful.

Perhaps it's best though for the original writer to make the call(or be contacted,) then for another person to verify that the guide does indeed work for the NES.

I don't know if it's just me but I was just under the impression that each NES game needed a complete NES FAQ for it. That's why I mentioned to put them back on the list. I don't really care whether they're on the list or not. I'm cool with it either way.

On a side note, to odino and Da Hui, the topic is ending soon... Decide on who's making the next one soon. Or if you want to both keep an active eye out and whoever posts the new one first wins...

I've noticed "Bimi Shinbo" is the Oishinbo game I've FAQed the other day.

Houma ga Koku is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, in another way it's written in the g.faqs db.
Kai Kemono Monogatari is actually Kaijuu Monogatari which is listed already.
Nyuuyouko Nyankiisu = Rockin' Kats

Magic Block is missing.
Devil Man is missing, I think.

There are few "games" for debate:
-Family Basic
-Family Basic V3
-Nintendo World Championships 1990
-Nantettatte!! Baseball Ko-Game Set '91 Kaimakuban
-Nantettatte!! Baseball Ko-Game Set OB All Star Hen

The latter two I've never heard about.
Devin Morgan | Posted 4/18/2007 2:56:34 PM | message detail
Something else to add. I removed Might and Magic from the incomplete list, based on Andrew's thorough discussion within the FAQ of the differences between the NES/APL2 versions. The other "other system" FAQs are too different (if a game was released on NES and SNES, chances are it's definitely NOT the same). Looking through the Linus Spacehead FAQ (for the Genesis version), it sounds like the NES version is the same is that, but I don't know if that's been confirmed.

I suppose those 5 games I've mentioned above should also be added then.

Basic could be done covering just how to use the program, and sample tutorials and links to Basic guides on the net. No way could you cover it completely, but a general guide shouldn't be that bad.

Just wrote a quicky FAQ for Barker Bill's Trick Shooting. It's really a basic game with not much to write about. I hope CJayC doesn't yell at me for a lot of it being similar to the other FAQ that's already up there for it. There wasn't much else to include, I could only think of one other tip to add that the other guide didn't have. So let's just hope it goes up without any problems.

Well that leaves both Nobunaga's Ambition games for NA strategy. Some good guides being posted lately, impressive.

Today I played a really really bad game, 'Power Soccer'. Or maybe I just don't get the "controls"...it felt more like a goalkeeper sim while the CPU does target practice.

I have noticed you list "Sherlock Holmes: Hakushaku Reijou Yuukai Jiken" and the same game under the "Meitantei Holmes" name. The site uses the latter title.

I'm surprised nobody has FAQed Madoola no Tsubasa: The Wing of Madoola yet. I've been getting into this one today and it is pretty cool for a 1986 release. I got stuck in one of the later levels because I never bothered to find the upgrade to jump higher and got caught in a pit. It reminds me a bit of Layla. I discovered a continue code, which I submitted moments ago.

Also, it is listed here at gamefaqs, twice:

Madoola no Tsubasa
Madoola no Tsubasa: The Wing of Madoola

The game is better known as simply "The Wing of Madoola" so perhaps that would be the one to keep.
