NES FAQ Completion Project, Part 5

adaml | Posted 1/5/2007 5:15:34 PM | message detail
Nice work on Another Druaga gentlemen. Another difficult Japanese game pretty much figured out!

Gemerl, I do have a complete Miracle Piano system. That will most likely be the last game I "play" through, if I do ever get around to finishing the others.

I only updated Druaga for the week-end. Rob sent me more great info via email so I can work on it some more before Monday. I also added enemy info.

By the way I noticed the 'Black Bass' games were mixed up. So the guide, reviews and codes were all for "The Black Bass" (Part 2 in Japan) and there is none for "The Black Bass (Japan)".

Speaking of which, what is the difference between the Jpn and NA version of Maniac Mansion?
odino | Posted 1/7/2007 10:03:48 AM | message detail
Druaga is done for good. Also I did the normal quest on the GB version.

Maniac Mansion, it was remade for the US market so they differ quite a lot. No screen scrolling, different display, different controls etc. The walkthroughs would probaly be nearly identical though. Just it's all in Japanese ;)

No chance this is you, is there Triwailende (if you still check the board)? ;) If not it seems the notoriety of that level is high.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZWKAnd5UZKc

I left when Part 4 got to 500, but now I'm back.
No, I didn't make that video, but I wish I had. :)
That level sure was hard! This gave me an idea, I could try to make video solutions (if written text isn't enough) on some of the harder levels and link to them on youtube.

The FAQ is going along well, although not in a fast pace. I uploaded the first version of it a couple of months ago. I do have newer versions on my computer, so maybe it's time to upload a newer version soon... we'll see.

I'd like to upload a map (it's too big for gamefaqs) and link to it from my FAQ, so could someone recommend me a good host? Thanks!

I've started working on Sugoro Quest. It will take me a little longer than usual so for as a first you can sign me up for that.
Gemerl | Posted 1/11/2007 9:24:40 PM | message detail
Hmm, a lot of people link images so I can see where a vid might help as an aside. Just so long as it isn't required viewing for the solution in case some people have trouble loading the vids.

Hadn't realizes you started it, keep it up!

I've started a FAQ for Urusei Yatsura: Lum's Wedding Bells (listed on GameFAQS as Urusei Yatsura: Ram no Wedding Bell), so sign me up for that, I guess.

I'll also take Marusa no Onna (listed on GameFAQS as Marsa no Onna) if no one else is interested, but that one could take a while, since I'll have to Babelfish my way through it.

I could help possibly, however, I would need to know about the legality of Emulators and ROMs.

From what I can see on the Fair Dealing of Canada, as long as it is for research or private use, it is okay. But I want to hear more from other members that know what they are saying first.

I think it's a grey area of the law but I don't know much about the legality of ROMs either. Most people use them irregardless of the law anyways. Finding ROM sites that aren't those annoying redirecting/top sites and/or filled with porn ads is a chore as well.

RandyPandy are you still playing Rocman X? I read two reviews who says it's really short, like three stages even? If they can finish it then I would think it's not glitched.

odino:

ROCMAN X (Sachen)
-In this Mega Man clone by Sachen you get a choice of picking from 3 levels
at the start. Each level has several rounds. When you beat all 3 levels you
have to play through 2 more levels, making the grand total 5 levels in all.
When you defeat the last character by knocking him out of his perch above,
you get a very nice ending for a pirate game.

Since I love the NES and two of my favorite games for it still don't have FAQs, and since I've only contributed one FAQ to this project so far, is it okay if I call 'dibs' on two NES games?

I plan to FAQ:

Bigfoot
Town & Country II: Thrilla's Surfari

Note that I've only beat the latter game once, and it gets brutal near the end. I still plan to attempt it, though. Both games are great. I've even written about them in Hardcore Gamer Magazine so they could be immortalized. Might as well FAQ them, too.

About to finish the Cobra Command FAQ. Will be posted before the end of the week.

Can you put me down for Infiltrator.

Also, is there any way to denote on the completion project list which games are in English, Japanese, etc?

Pluvius | Posted 1/24/2007 5:54:08 PM | message detail
That would be a bit difficult, as a number of games released only in Japan had no Japanese text in them. If we were talking about a later system it would be a lot easier since by the early 90's very few Japanese games were playable in English (or had no text at all).

Hey everybody, I've been missing lately. =P Wrote a quicky for Insector X. I was sick today all day and stuck at home so I decided to write a quick FAQ, seeing how I haven't done so in a while. I don't think I'll be coming back right away though. I've been far too busy with everything. Oh well, cheers everybody!

Well, I just finished my FAQ for Thrilla's Surfari and it's in the queue. I rather doubt anyone will ever write anything better for that particular game, since it took this long for me to even cover it. This is my second contribution to the project since its inception, and the better of the two I think (the other one was R.C. Pro-Am II).

Also, is there any way to denote on the completion project list which games are in English, Japanese, etc?

I had this idea too but Devin didn't like it, saying people should do their research about a game. I still think it's a good idea though as I think a lot of people see "Japanese release only" and don't even bother, or perhaps some obscure Japanese title.

On another note, I'm impressed there is such a big amount of guides being produced these last few weeks. Might work on something this week-end.
LtCmdData | Posted 1/27/2007 4:40:36 AM | message detail
I've done 4 guides for this project and I'm currently down for one that needs to be finished before it hits a year. ;)

Anyone know who is the leader in terms of total guides for the project?

I just wish there were more...good....games left.

From the stats page:

Bryan: 32
Da Hui: 30
Me: 26 (45 including Sachen games)
ASchultz: 23
merc for hire: 19
Gemerl: 15
DEngel: 13
Devin: 11
strawhat: 6

I think that covers all that have more than a handful of games FAQed.
Devin Morgan | Posted 1/27/2007 5:52:36 AM | message detail
odino, a blanket NA/JP/EU note next to each game would have been fine with me. However, I am not interested in going indepth as to just how playable (or not?) a Japanese game is to someone not fluent in the language. If a game sounds or looks interesting enough to you, try it; if you don't like it, move on.

Woa, I'm almost past Brian. I'm actually surprised by that. But then again, I started kind of late so all of my NES FAQs are included in this project. After Insector X gets posted it'll be 31, I should try and FAQ a bit more. =P

Also, odino, I think you should give yourself the credit of the 45. I'm not sure exactly what Sachen games are and how different they are, but I do know those games were on the incomplete list.

nah most Sachen games suck, Strategist and Rockball are perhaps decent enough games but Mine Sweep (3 games => pretty much just half a game) or those Light Gun 2-1 ones, that's hardly worth making a guide for. Yet it's done and better than nothing.

I just wish there were more...good....games left.

There are still quite a few decent games left. I suppose jumping at Secret Scout will make the NES experience sour in no time, but if you look around on the project page or go through a few games you may find some good stuff.
Some examples:

Back to the Future II & III
Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge
Chase H.Q.
Choplifter
Chuuka Daisen
Door Door
Fuzzical Fighter
Joust
Metal Mech: Man & Machine
Micro Machines
Recca
Robocop Versus The Terminator
Shadow Land
Time Diver: Eon Man
Titan
Titan Warriors
Toobin'
Top Gun
Ultimate Air Combat

All depends on your preference I suppose.

#1 Brian, not Bryan.
#2 CVount the games dude, they are in the completed columns.
#3 I am shocked I am still up on Da Hui, as I have been brutally inactive lately on the NES front (last year I had a real GBC kick going on).
#4 Back To The Future II & III is a HORRIBLE game, Decent? NO! :P
#5 There is no #6.

#4 Back To The Future II & III is a HORRIBLE game, Decent? NO! :P

LOL, I remember seeing that game being reviewed by the Angry Nintendo Nerd. Hilarious as hell. From the looks in that game, sounds like the Goomba and Spinies from Mario were ripped off.

There are still some good titles out there that don't have guides yet. Recca, Gun-Nac, Crisis Force, Tetsuwan Atom, and probably more. I'll have to look at the list sometime. I wanted to tackle a couple more Color Dreams games after I'm done with Secret Scout, and maybe a few by Bunch Games if I can stomach them.
odino | Posted 1/28/2007 6:15:55 AM | message detail
Yeah don't forget Transformers on your list of ultra-crappy games you want to FAQ ;)
Da Hui | Posted 1/28/2007 8:13:24 AM | message detail
If you want a decent simple game to FAQ, try Rolling Thunder. It's ridiculously simple. Just keep moving to the right and guys will consistently spawn from the right on the top and bottom of the screen, if you stop, they will appear from the left. That's basically the whole game. I just don't want to FAQ it because I'm not sure how to make it past 5kb and it probably won't be accepted, not as a full circle anyways. =P I've been waiting for somebody to scratch that simple one off the list.

Put me down for Kaijuu Monogatari (Shell Monster Story)
odino | Posted 1/28/2007 10:38:54 AM | message detail
There is also this make-your-own-sidescrolling-shooter game. I forgot the name. But I think the default mission is really hard.

Rolling Thunder looks easy, and it's on my list of maybes. I would actually try to find out which doors contain power-ups rather than a Superman-style FAQ. There is a 48K guide for the Arcade game which doesn't even cover that but has lots of details on the entire game.

A similar do-the-same-thing-for-the-entire-game is Empire City 1931 (Magnum Kiki Ippatsu). Adam even submitted the last level strategy as a cheat.
pseudo | Posted 1/28/2007 2:28:39 PM | message detail
Sure, Gemerl, I would do that, but I wanted to finish my two other guides first, Atlantis and Secret Scout.

The make-your-own-sidescrolling-shooter game is probably Dezaemon, Odino. I played the build in game quite a bit, but never really bothered with the editor. I tried Transformers before but found it was REALLY difficult. I had to use the cheat function in FCEU to make it to the end, and then I got stuck. Has anyone ever finished that game before?
Da Hui | Posted 1/28/2007 3:30:43 PM | message detail
Yeah, pseudo's right, it's either Dezaemon or maybe it's Doraemon. I'm pretty sure it's Dezaemon though. I think a FAQ for that game would be very nice though. If I actually had the patience for a game like that, I'd do it, but hell, I've written one FAQ in the past 6 months so I don't think I'll be able to do it. =P

You know what, on second thought. I was thinking, since I'm probably one of the very few people who have a copy of the prototype to Hit The Ice, I might as well FAQ the game. You can mark me down for that game. After that I may make a stab at some other prototypes and just rare games in general like Taro's Quest, Pescatore, and Deep Dungeon IV. I don't know, I'll see how much time I'll have. But definately mark me down for Hit the Ice. And for the time being, mark me down for Insector X since I have it in queue.
