NES FAQ Completion Project, Part 5

adaml | Posted 1/28/2007 5:46:27 PM | message detail
There are still some good titles out there that don't have guides yet. Recca, Gun-Nac, Crisis Force, Tetsuwan Atom, and probably more. I'll have to look at the list sometime. I wanted to tackle a couple more Color Dreams games after I'm done with Secret Scout, and maybe a few by Bunch Games if I can stomach them.

pseudo, the game Layla has an incomplete FAQ. I only know this because I am stuck on the last level (level 8). This game definitely needs a full guide.

I just noticed, the 300th FAQ for this project has been accepted today! Woo! What a success this project has been so far! I'm proud of all of us who have worked hard to make this happen. Let's keep up the hard work and take down as many games as possible. Woo!

Deep Dungeon IV's translation is totally broken. It's obvious that whoever did it didn't bother to test it.

As for Layla, if you got the chips (or disks or whatever) from each of the levels (they're not too hard to find), then the only thing you're missing is rescuing your partner from Asteroid 5. Not surprising; she's nearly impossible to find if you don't know she exists.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TWj0c8_Sso

Back when I beat this game I used a nice walkthrough on a Japanese blog somewhere, but Google isn't giving it to me anymore. But if you don't mind video walkthroughs, that YouTube link works well.

Rob
adaml | Posted 1/29/2007 8:50:54 PM | message detail
pluvius, thanks for the info. I got a couple of those disks along the way but I assumed they just gave you the passwords after beating the level. In the levels I didn't find the disks, I didn't get a password. I should have known it had something to do with that. I'll also try to find the girl on Asteroid 5 before looking at that video. Thanks a ton!

Most likely my final major data alteration for the NES:

There is a game that's been missing from the db called Indora no Hikari, an untranslated DQ clone.
VS. Excitebike was removed as it's for the Disk System.
Katsuba Densetsu renamed to => Kurogane Hiroshi no Yosou Daisuki! Kachiuma Densetsu
odino | Posted 1/30/2007 3:12:52 AM | message detail
Has anyone ever finished that game before?

This is probably the only game where I had a game over screen before getting past the first enemy :D It's so difficult, it makes Mission: Impossible look like Jaws.

For the Deep Dungeon IV translation you have do some tweaking, read the Romhacking article for some more on that. It's still a little buggy but should be at least playable.
Da Hui | Posted 1/30/2007 5:30:18 PM | message detail
Oh then in that case I won't bother playing Deep Dungeon IV =P

That mapper fix on DD4 only fixes the ROM. The text is a nonsensical mess for the most part, partially because of bad translation and partially because the translator didn't check to see if the text was being displayed in the right places.

I think I remember someone mentioning the Transformers Famicom game as one they would like to FAQ but they could not get through that maze level. Check this out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wl2k37U3vcs

Stage 9 is the level that is endless unless you take the correct path through the level. This unlocks the end of the stage. The video shows exactly how to do it.

I had beaten the game years ago using the solve from a Japanese site that has since vanished, but I do not recall 2 things from the video. In one of the later stages (I think stage 8), Ultra Magnus goes into a room and is greeted by a plane dropping bombs that turns into Megatron when shot. It looks like he receives an item in this room, a "U" icon..

Also, upon beating the game, you turn into Rodimus Prime. This may or may not have happened when I finished the game years ago, but it might have something to do with retrieving that item. Anyway, you get to start the game over playing as Rodimus Prime. I'm going to play through the game again tonight and see if anything interesting happens when you beat it a 2nd time.

Anyway, whoever wants to FAQ this will now have the correct path through Stage 9.

And here is yet another clip, answering a couple of my previous queries.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9l3ZIEj7n9U&mode=related&search=

Not only does this guy find a couple warps, but he does not get to the screen with Megatron and when he finishes the game does not turn into Rodimus Prime.

So many of those old Famicom games had a lot of hidden stuff in it. Layla won't let you finish it without finding the girl in Asteroid 5, Tetsuwan Atom has a secret I cannot figure out in the "bells" level, and now the multiple endings in Transformers. Good stuff!

Thanks for that, Adam. I'm going to try finish level 9 now that I know how to do it. =)

Wikipedia says that you have to collect the letters that spell Rodimus in levels 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9 in order to use Rodimus Prime the second time around. The warps have something to do with rescuing Bumblebee from the Decepticons apparently.

I would tackle all three some point in the near future if no one else is interested. I'm very interested in figuring out Tetsuwan Atom at the very least.
Pluvius | Posted 1/30/2007 8:23:26 PM | message detail
Something I'd like to see is an explanation for how to get the different endings in the Japanese version of Karnov. But chances are we'll never find all of the secrets in so many games. I was as shocked as everyone else when I heard that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde had an ending that didn't suck, for example.

Rob
odino | Posted 1/30/2007 8:51:23 PM | message detail
I forgot to mention that I split Puss 'n Boots and Nagagutsu o Haita Neko: Sekai Isshuu 80 Nichi Dai Bouken, so the latter is "new". I've found that they are very different.

Great find with Transformers!
Da Hui | Posted 1/30/2007 8:55:32 PM | message detail
I hope somebody writes up a FAQ for Transformers now. That would be a great game to knock off this list, that game really needs a FAQ. Somebody should get Volguard II done to get the V list done. ;)

Pseudo, thanks for the info on spelling out Rodimus' name. I'll have to watch the video again closely and see where he got the letters. I have this game on my NES Game Finishes guide but will definitely have to revise it. I want to find out if there is a different game by using Rodimus to finish it.

If/when you decide to tackle Tetsuwan Atom, I can help you with the first couple of levels. Just figuring out how to fly is a task. I've looked on youtube for videos on this game but have found nothing. It's cool that games like Layla and Transformers have videos on there.

Pluvius, I was just as surprised as you with the ending to Dr. Jekyll. I thought I had that game beat years ago, so finding out such an obscure game had multiple endings was a pleasant surprise. I had no idea Karnov had different endings in the Fami version. I wonder if the US version has these endings?

Alright, I know this is off-topic but you all seem to have the pulse on the NES...

I saw this auction on ebay that is offering every US licensed game...totaled at 670 different games. About 520 more then I....

Anyway he lists a TMNT part 4....anybody know anything about this? Is that just Tournament Fighters?
pseudo | Posted 1/30/2007 11:35:46 PM | message detail
It more than likely is Tournament Fighters, maybe he just got lazy and listed it as TMNT 4.
adaml | Posted 1/30/2007 11:49:43 PM | message detail
Also off topic, but notice Miracle Piano as well as the originally licensed Tengen games (RBI Baseball, Gauntlet, etc.) are not on his list.

Adam, sure that would be great. I still can't figure out that "Bells" level as you call it. I probably will work on it after I'm done with of my uncomplete guides.

Youtube is great for videos of these games. I was watching a video for Championship Lode Runner awhile back when I got stuck. They were made by the same person who did the second Transformers video you mentioned earlier.
odino | Posted 1/31/2007 6:44:55 AM | message detail
Volguard II, isn't that yet another scroller? :) I suppose there aren't THAT many scrollers left.
All V gone, that would certain be neat and make the statistics easier for Brian :D

Today I finished up Wagyan World 2 though I am not 100% done because I noticed there are a lot of different paths to take and secret warps.

Other than that I set up a guide for Dai Meiro, it will most likely take me quite a bit to make those maps.

Anybody heard of ASchultz lately btw?

Odino, nice work on those Sachen games. I think I claimed either Hell Fighter or Silver Eagle awhile back, which aren't bad in terms of Sachen games, but feel free to do those. Gaiapolis is interesting as well. I have hardly anytime to dedicate to a FAQ (a good one anyway), so it's great seeing that no NES game is exempt from being FAQed.

One quick thing about the Transformers game, I created a code that makes you invincible, but I don't believe it is appropriate talking about it here seeing how it makes use of an emulator's cheat program. This code, which also gives you the ability to continuously fly and use the spread shot, will help out immensely when trying to FAQ the game. Email me if you are interested.

I know I haven't done much work on the Dragon Wars guide I signed up for yet, but that's because I hate playing ROMs. I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm going to be starting the main portion of the guide now. I have just found my graph paper, and more importantly I have a reproduction copy of the proto on indefinite loan. Might get something going after all. And in the mean time, if anyone plays Wheel of Fortune feat. Vanna White for whatever reason, jot down the puzzle and category that you get...I'd like to scratch that one off the list too, but I don't play it nearly enough myself to get them all. Really just want to finish that one off since I've been working on it for quite some time now.
Da Hui | Posted 2/2/2007 5:28:26 PM | message detail
Does anybody have any ideas for something I could include in my Hit the Ice FAQ? I want to make this thing top-notch and am including every little detail I can in the guide, I'm going to make it so good, people will wish the game did come out so they could use the FAQ. =P For those who don't know, it's basically a hockey RPG where you run around and face other teams instead of monsters. What I've gotten so far is the rosters for each team and strategies. I'm slowly working on a large map of the whole world where I will list what happens in every house since they are all the same. I'm not sure what else to add. Any suggestions? I think it would just be hilarious if I wrote such a good guide and won FotM, I'd be the only person to win an FotM on a game that never came out. =P

TripleJumpMB | Posted 2/2/2007 9:51:41 PM | message detail
Okay, I looked up some stuff on fair use of ROMs. It can possibly be accepted under conditions like this.

Fair Use:

- the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; [FAQing, not for money :O]
- the nature of the copyrighted work; - [Old'd]
- the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. [Few NES games being sold besides eBay..]

Fair Dealing:

It's for educational purpose and studying it

No other copies are made, deleted once finished

An expensive alternative was available.

Not likely to make a problem in the market ;)

So what do you guys take on the legality of ROMs? Like I said, I want to be sure before I try to get them to help the project.

Rally Bike looks ok, maybe at some point.

Do you guys ever use the youtube videos as basis of a walkthrough? I've watched a few and the guy cheats way too much to really make it a guide for players to follow. I bet that King Kong 2 video skips 80% of the game. Nice to see some secrets I suppose.

CJay is so cool to let me use an 84 margin for my Dai Meiro guide, otherwise those maze outlines would look really crappy. I'll finish off Easy this week-end.

Alright I included every little thing I could possibly thnk of in my Hit The Ice FAQ. I even drew an ASCII map of the entire world in the game, describing what is on each and every block! That's how in depth I went. =P However, I still didn't make it as big as I thought it'd be. I should've just realized that a NES hockey game was not going to bring in a big FAQ. =P Oh well... Da Hui, do you have that part in Hit the Ice where you have to visit someone a certain amount of times to get an item...it's been awhile since I played it, but I remember playing the game before Lost Levels released it and getting stuck on that part and thinking, "NOBODY will be able to help me figure this part out" simply because the game was an unreleased prototype. Can't wait to see your FAQ.

Yes, I included that. Hehe, trust me, I said I included everything I could possibly think of. I might add the game modes even though they're really straight forward. The review on Lost Levels is also wrong too regarding that tube. I submitted it as an unlock to GameFAQs. In case you really want to play by the time it goes up, here's how you get it. To the south of the Blacks' arena there is a lone house on a peninsula. Inside is the old man who loves apples. You have to give him a total of ten, but can only carry five at a time. The review was wrong because they said you couldn't buy the apples anywhere. However, the two closes shops to that house has apples inside that you can buy. Just buy 5, run down there, give them to him, go back and buy 5 more, and bring those to him. After that he'll give it to you. Helps a lot because there's a lot of free gold in houses out there and there's a cheap shop in the southeast of the map. The main reason I like it though is because of the fact that other teams won't try to face you in the ocean. :)
