NES FAQ Completion Project, Part 5

odino | Posted 2/7/2007 8:11:06 PM | message detail
I've noticed that Grand Prix is actually F-1 Sensation, and Mike Ditka Big Play Football is Quarter Back Scramble: American Football Game.

Finishing up Infiltrator walkthrough. I should submit it this weekend.

Infiltrator...now that is a game worthy of a walkthrough. The only reason I beat that was using one of the old NES tip books by Meston and DeMaria. The flying part was an absolute *****.

Those guides were pretty damn good too...and fun to read. Many were the times a bathroom break was prolonged because I was reading one of those books...ah, the memories :P
The Admiral | Posted 2/9/2007 2:44:02 PM | message detail
Wow, I had no idea that there were published guides for Infiltrator. Could you guys take a look at my guide once it's up and let me know what you think? Everything in it is original (and I have never seen anything about this game), so I may have missed a few good tips.

On a side note, while the learning curve for those helicopter levels is absolutely brutal, they're all very easy once you know how to fly. In fact, they are all identical, so they become more boring than challenging by the end. The enemy base stages are just outright frustrating, because there is no possible to way to beat the game without dying a few times. You will ALWAYS run out of time if you don't know the right order to enter the buildings. Still, I found this is a surprisingly fun game once I had the hang of it.

I'm going to start working on Higemaru Makaijima: Nanatsu no Shima Daibouken whenever free time permits. It's a very interesting game and one that is in definite need of a guide. I've also never done a Capcom game, so I think this is the game that sucks me back into FAQing.

I noticed the game Toys in the NES section. I am 99.9% sure that a demo of this was never even worked on for the NES. I think some magazine just had it as a future NES release years ago and meant to have it as a future SNES release. Can this be scratched off the list? In the absolutely rare chance that an NES proto does turn up for this game, I will be more than happy to resubmit the game data for it. :)

I think we should get some of these cancelled games removed from the database. If there's at least a 75% chance that we will never see a proto, then just remove it. Besides, if the proto ever does leak, we could always just readd it like adam said...

I'm not sure about the others, but Airball and probably Cue Stick or Crossbow exist. Airball has been on Ebay a couple of times, the original and several reproductions apparently. A funny thread appeared awhile back about Bio Force Ape, but a real one hasn't turned up yet I don't think.
pseudo | Posted 2/10/2007 12:08:24 AM | message detail
Oh yeah, there's another proto recently released: Buzz & Waldog. If you go to the lostlevels.org you can find the ROM.
adaml | Posted 2/10/2007 5:19:22 PM | message detail
From what I know about what has been found and dumped so far and what protos have been rumored to be in the hands of collectors, this is what I can tell you about that list (because I don't want to spoil any surprised that the lostlevels staff has, I will just put a Y next to games I know exist and N next to ones that most likely do not):

Airball - Y

Airborne Ranger - N

Alien Storm - N (probably just mistaken for the Genesis game)

Alien vs. Predator - N

An American Tail - N

Big Mouth Bass - N

Bio Force Ape - ? (there are real screenshots of this, so I would probably leave it up)

Black Tiger - N (#1 on my want list, but someone proved the 2 screenshots found in a Game Players magazine years ago were from a computer version)

Blockout - N

Bruce Lee Lives - N

Crossbow - Y

Cue Stick - Y

Euro Cup Soccer - N

Flash, The - N

Glove Pilot - Y

Happily Ever After - N

Happy Camper - N

Hard Drivin' - N

Inspector Gadget - N

License to Kill - N

Lord of Lightning - N

Manipulator: Glove Adventure - Y

Matchbox Racers - N

New Kids on the Block - N

Play Isle - N

Police Academy - Y

Power Play Football - Y (the Mike Ditka title, correct?)

Putt Master - M

Pyramids of Ra - Y

Pyross - N

Rocky - N

Samurai Conflict - N

Scarabeus - Y

Skyscraper - N

Starblade - N

Super Square Deal - N

Targhan - N

Thomas the Tank Engine - Y

Toys - N

Triumph - N

Trivial Pursuit - N

Ultimate Journey - N

War on Wheels - Y

Wild Boys - N

World Trophy Soccer - N

There are a couple others that were found but aren't on gamefaqs. I'd love to say what they are, but keep looking at lostlevels.org over the next month. I believe these are finally going to get a release.

I wonder if Hard Drivin' and Robocop Vs Terminator are also the Genesis games that were put in here. I hope Lost Levels updates already. They're pretty lazy when it comes to writing these reviews. =P I don't see why they can't just keep the download in their downloads section and write the review when they have some time.

I'll try to remove a few that don't even have screenshots available, were most likely just rumours or for another system. It's a bit of a hassle to proof to CJay that they do NOT exist.

Power Play/Pad Football is not the Ditka game, because this one uses the Power Pad. And Robocop vs Terminator has a proto released, I played the first few levels once and it looks pretty good. I might FAQ it.
Gemerl | Posted 2/11/2007 12:24:57 AM | message detail
If Hard Drivin was so bad on the Genesis, scaling it down tot he NES might be disasterous... of course I did prefer Strider NES to Strider GEN... If I might be so bold, lol.

Hey I was wondering. Is there any way to report a FAQ that's an empty circle that should be full circle? I was looking into FAQing Days of Thunder and looked at the guide that's already up for the game. It looks like that one should already be a full circle. It seems like it's got just as much as my Race America FAQ and that's full circle.

Also, does anybody happen to have any idea how long Bashi Bazook: Morphoid Master/Bio-Senshi Dan is? I'm already starting to have a little difficulty with it. =P Hopefully it won't keep getting tricky like the second area.

I tried playing Raid 2020 today. Wow, what a terrible game. Almost reminds me of Action 52... I played for an hour and actually made it to the final level, but couldn't figure out what to do and gave up. I see a definite pattern in these unlicensed NES titles.

adaml | Posted 2/11/2007 9:14:45 PM | message detail
I remember being stuck on Raid 2020 as well. I did finally beat it but I forget exactly what I had to do to move on in one or two of the levels.

Bashi Bazook has a few tricks that need to be completed to beat the game. I know in one of the later levels there is an elevator that you can take through the floor. It doesn't look like it can go through it, but it does. I haven't gone all the way through it yet.

As for why Lost Levels holds back on some games, there are various reasons. One of them involves the owners of certain protos letting us dump the game but not releasing it to the public. The owners allow their games to be dumped to preserve them and protect them from bitrot and anything else that could damage a proto. Some of the games that have been released were allowed because of deals swung with the owners of those games to get them released. Other games can be chalked up to laziness. I was marked down to do the review of one of them, but not having the time to dedicate to such a project because of family and work have stalled that. Notice how many FAQs I have written in the last couple of years :)

So you mean "Thomas the Tank Engine" is only held back because you haven't reviewed it? :o

Da Hui, I've never managed to get an FAQ upgraded. Good luck with 'Days of Thunder' :)
Da Hui | Posted 2/12/2007 12:12:49 AM | message detail
I wish there was some way to contact CJayC about Days of Thunder. I mean that FAQ really does have enough to be considered a full FAQ. I might tackle it after Bashi Bazook since the gameplay is very similar to Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge. I also really want to complete every NES Driving game. There aren't too many left and even if they are in Japanese, you can still easily FAQ them. I might go after a lot of Driving titles after Bashi Bazook. I might also try tackling Taro's Quest before the driving games unless somebody else wants to go after that one. I really think somebody who truly enjoys RPGs should try that one though. I'm not really a big RPG fan but will do it if I must.

Also to adaml, I can understand that, but letting the protos leak a little bit to the FAQ writers for the sake of the project would be nice. :) I'm not asking to release it to the public, just so this project could be a success, for the NES commands it! ;)

LostLevels released Scarabeus, not sure why they don't make a mainpage spotlight but it's great they release these titles regularly!!
adaml | Posted 2/12/2007 3:22:47 PM | message detail
Quick comment on Scarabeus. This could end up being the largest NES FAQ every if someone actually felt like solving every room. You can skip tons of levels during the game, but there are at least 2000 levels.

Also, for those who have been online since the mid-90s, you will recognize this title as one of the 2 protos that Mike Etler had on his NES list...because he owned it. It is now unleashed to the masses.

I might go after a lot of Driving titles after Bashi Bazook.

I suggest Family Circult '91 and Michael Andretti's World Grand Prix. (Unfortunately your Bill Elliot FAQ didn't help me too much on that game, but the game is so horrible that I doubt any FAQ would be too helpful.)

Rob
Da Hui | Posted 2/12/2007 7:30:56 PM | message detail
Hehe, that's probably because I wrote that FAQ in less than an hour... literally. I hardly played the game at all. I know a lot about racing in games and stuff so I don't have to play the actual game too much. Besides, it's just a FAQ, mainly supposed to give you some quick tips that you may or may not have known by now.

And thanks for the suggestions, I'll try those out. If I like Family Circus then I'll be lucky since there's two of those. :)

I'll do Scarabeus, give me five minutes, erm I mean MONTHS :/

I got this for the games I wanted to remove: "No benefit to removing games already in the database unless they were mistakenly added". So unless you guys take it to Sailor Bacon directly...here is the list:
-Airborn Ranger
-Alien Storm
-An American Tail
-Big Mouth Bass
-Inspector Gadget
-Lord of Lightning
-New Kids on the Block
-Play Isle
-Pyross
-Rocky
-Samurai Conflict
-Skyscraper
-Starblade
-Thargan
-Toys
-Wild Boys
IMHO they were added mistakenly as they were most likely never really past the planning stage for the NES.

RoboCop Versus The Terminator is very different than the Sega console versions. It is much more a platformer than the street action from the other games.
Da Hui | Posted 2/12/2007 9:46:17 PM | message detail

Awesome job on that FAQ Admiral. :)

Anyway... I want to enact a new policy regarding this project. If you claim a game and cannot follow it through within say, a 12 month (1 year) period, it will become unclaimed once again. I understand that we don't all have a ton of free time/motivation, but I think 6 months is more than enough time to get done with any of these games. Personally, I feel a year is _really_ stretching it thin. Any comments?

Agreed but I still hope that person could finish it at some point. I personally will look for another game first before touching them. Also it depends if the person posts here, perhaps they can then "extend" that sign-up, or re-sign it ;) Atlantis no Nazo and Crystal Mines come to mind.

So Devin, about time you tackle that Keisan Game? :p
adaml | Posted 2/13/2007 12:21:25 AM | message detail
Devin, that sounds reasonable enough. I have a couple Sachen games claimed that I wouldn't mind getting to, but I realize I don't have a ton of free time, so if anyone does them it is fine by me, it has been well over a year since I claimed them.

I just realized that the game Pyros (spelled Pyross on Gamefaqs) is the FDS game Wardner no Mori. Seeing how a lot of Famicom/Euro-only NES games have turned up protos lately meant for US NES release but never saw the light of day here (New Ghostbusters II, Cross Fire, Makai Island...these have all had protos found with Nintendo of America on the title screen), there is a slightly higher chance of a proto for Pyros showing up than the others on the list.

Lastly, not that I want to open up a can of worms here, but how do people feel about Famicom Disk System games being added to the project? This will mess up the stats, but the FDS is so intertwined with the Famicom/NES that it would almost make sense to include those titles. I was playing Koneko Monogatari - The Adventures of Chatran tonight and the game could have been a prequel to Super Pitfall. They are both by Pony Canyon and the main character in this FDS game is Quickclaw the cat in Super Pitfall. Anyway, I realized a disk and a cart are completely different animals, but I figure I'd throw it out for debate.

Yeah Admiral, that Infiltrator guide is going to help out a lot of people who probably owned the game back in the day and gave up on it. I guarantee you get a lot of emails from people like that over the years.

As for Scarabeus, I was a bit off in saying that it had at least 2000 levels. More like upwards of over 4000 levels. The only good thing about this is that you can enter a password (IGORSAYSWARP - found by Skrybe at Lost Levels...I'll submit it to the code database if it isn't there yet) that will give you the option of letting the computer solve the puzzle for you or lets you skip a level too, which should make it easy to FAQ. Easy yes, but also a test of endurance.

Odino, you might need years to complete a Scarabeus walkthrough. I finally decided to discover how many puzzles there really are. Idut's Tomb has 2000. Teti's Tomb has 2500. The next 2 Tombs have 3000 and 3500 respectively. Pharoah Scarabeus' Tomb has 4000 possible puzzles. That makes a grand total of 15000 puzzles. Kind of daunting.

I've adjusted 10 different lines that looked like they may be over 80 characters, run it through http://faqs.ign.com/format_faq.html a bunch of times and, short of counting lines, cannot figure out which line is the long one. It is. However, a good deal of Famicom games in Japan were originally released on the FDS before they were ported to the Famicom. Therefore, it would be safe to say that FDS/FAM games are exactly the same, sans issues with saving.
