Woo! Finally finished that game! That game really needed a FAQ. Some if it was really tough. Also happened to find a few secrets along the way.

Alright! I submitted a contribution report for Days of Thunder and they actually accepted it. Could cross that one off the list too. :)

Funny that, I did the same for Top Gun yesterday and it got a complete status :D The guy could have expanded Level 3 and 4 some more but it's complete nonetheless. Btw Top Gun was the most popular NA game without a full guide according to the site, which has now gone to Contra Force. Back to the Future II & III would also be complete if the author wouldn't have just written "I'll let you complete this part yourself" for Part III...

FDS, most games are unpopular Japanese releases but keeping an extra list probably won't hurt. Lots of games are for the NES too, Eggland (Adv. Lolo), Roger Rabbit (Bugs Bunny). It just seems actively getting people to write guide for it is going a little too far for now. Perhaps when most NES games are down to untranslated Japananese text adventures :) Well I have been working on "Dirty Pair" for a few days already after I read the translator couldn't beat Stage 2...which is actually really easy to accomplish.

Adam, your 5192 line is 82 char long, just cut "crushed." to the next line of that SCARABEUS paragraph if you still want it 80 length. Speaking of that game, I think it would make a lot more sense to give playing tips, in-depth strategies to solving puzzles rather than step-by-step solutions to all 15,000 rooms. Examples of situations that will arise, how to deal with special tiles and so on. It would still be quite tough to write though.

Where can you see what the most popular games are without FAQs? I remember seeing that when they used to have the request form, but I can't find it now.

I thought that Contra Force already had a full-circle guide. I remember reading it before.
odino | Posted 2/13/2007 10:19:41 PM | message detail
Perhaps there was one before but now there is only a Contra Series Ending FAQ.

Too see the most popular guides without an FAQ, Advanced Search -> Show all games on the platform: NES -> that do not have a complete FAQ -> sorted by popularity and so on... Looks like Captain Silver is the least popular game ^_^

This is done by popularity. Feel free to change it as you wish.

Oh and now that it's released, the list still shows Pyramids of Ra as separate item as well as Scarabeus.

I wrote a short guide for Freedom Force today too.

I remember there being a guide up for Contra Force as well...I checked it out about a month ago. Wonder what happened to it...

Shingen's up there eh... I'd better get crackin and finish mine. I'm a few paragraphs in. Just that I ran into midterms... and Hotel Dusk.

Could it be 'Faididi' pulled most of the guides from the site, including Contra Force? I suppose this one goes back on the list, anyone a Contra fan here? I wonder if there are any more NES games that don't have a guide now.
Gemerl | Posted 2/14/2007 12:59:28 PM | message detail
Contra Force isn't necessarily Contra. If someone wants to take this game based on the virtues of Contra, Super C, Alien Wars, etc, prepare to be let down.

Stepping, back, going to odino's remove list; If we have a consensus here that those games are unlikely to ever have protos discovered, go ahead and re-submit the removals. I'm always wary of large lists of things like that, because each game deserves research, and large lists tend to not be gone over as carefully.

with odino and adaml on the case Ceej, I would say they are likely close to being as sure as anyone could possibly be. However, I will let them speak their own piece on this, as I know little about this end of the project.

In other news, Tecmo NBA Basketball could see action as soon as two weeks from today, so hopefully I will FINALLY get it done.

Mr. Veasey, nice of you to drop by.

Just to be safe, I'm going to run that list by a couple people that know even better than I do. I'm pretty sure the games I put an N next to will never show up, unless it is one of those rare Sunman-esque appearances.

Let me get some feedback from the experts and I'll post ASAP.

Oh yeah, any idea why the Scarabeus/Pyramids of Ra passwords disappeared?

There's something about the passwords, I tried to submit the Transformers cheat and it said "already listed" ?! So perhaps you submitted that too but we can't see it LOL
adaml | Posted 2/14/2007 10:55:26 PM | message detail
Funny thing was, the passwords were listed yesterday, but are gone today.

Anyways, I got the man himself, TheRedEye, to go over the list. He said the following are definitely NOT out there:

Airborne Ranger
Alien Storm
Alien vs. Predator
An American Tail
Big Mouth Bass
Bio Force Ape
Black Tiger
Blockout
Bruce Lee Lives
Crossbow
Euro Cup Soccer
Glove Pilot
Happily Ever After
Happy Camper
Hard Drivin'
Inspector Gadget
License to Kill
Lord of Lightning
Manipulator: Glove Adventure
Matchbox Racers
New Kids on the Block
Play Isle
Police Academy
Power Play Football
Pyross
Rocky
Samurai Conflict
Skyscraper
Starblade
Super Square Deal
Targhan
Toys
Triumph
Trivial Pursuit
Ultimate Journey
Wild Boys
World Trophy Soccer

I mistook the two Glove games for being on the U-Force Power Games cart (which is known to exist but hasn't been properly emulated yet)...for some reason I always think the U-Force and Power Glove are one and the same. So yeah, those 2 Glove games are not out there.

TheRedEye says: "These games have not surfaced, at all. The programmer of Hard Drivin' has it on his resume, and when [someone] asked him if he kept a copy of the game (way back in the day), he said something like "I don't give out other people's property." So he may or may not have it. Police Academy, I can confirm that Steve Woita owns a copy of HIS version of the game. However, his was second (there were two, both cancelled). The first remains unsurfaced, so I left it on the list. "

I was surprised to see that there is a copy of The Flash out there. I had no idea. So the known protos in existence from the list are:
Airball
Cue Stick
The Flash
Putt Master
Pyramids of Ra
Scarabeus
Thomas the Tank Engine
War on Wheels

So unless we are keeping Police Academy and Hard Drivin' on the Gamefaqs list because the programmers have copies, I guess everything else on the top list is good to take down. TheRedEye, who keeps in touch with dreamtr about all things prototypical, is about as good a source as you will find on this topic.

Is there any chance at all that those guys will dump Police Academy and Hard Drivin'? I mean if they don't give it out when asked because it's on their resume, I don't see them releasing it any time soon... Because if not, I really don't think that those games should be listed. That would help this project so much if those got removed too. Just because of the fact that it makes the list that much more possible. Now if we could find a way around those damn Japanese text games we'd be all set, just a lot of hard work. =P

adaml | Posted 2/15/2007 12:12:17 AM | message detail
Yeah, Police Academy and Hard Drivin probably should be cut. Chances are nobody will ever get to play them or own the prototype (other than the programmer), so why even have them on the game list.

I asked TheRedEye about The Flash and he said he accidentally cut it from the list, as no known proto exists, so that one should be cut as well.

As was mentioned earlier, it would be easy to add games if they do become available, as was the case with Sunman, Secret Ties, etc.

They might change their mind about it at some point. Having a few canceled games in the db is much better than like... 50?! You don't really expect to be done with the project by the end of year, do you? :)

Games get translated all the time, I wouldn't worry about that. I really like those text adventures but they are a huge task. Too bad the Sherlock Holmes project failed after the script was all translated.

I'm working on Hell Fighter right now, although Adam tells me the last boss is really hard. Reading through his Ending FAQ makes a lot of games seem so short, "after 4/6 stages you fight the boss" seems to simple on paper :)
And as an added bonus I completed The Golf '92.
Devin Morgan | Posted 2/15/2007 2:39:57 AM | message detail
So, in that case... What are we going to do in regards to the incomplete list on the project site?

Speaking of the Japanese text adventure games, I'm currently working (slowly) on Marusa no Onna, so put me down for that. I'm translating my way through it, one word at a time. The main adversary from the movie hasn't shown up yet, so this could easily take six months for a full walkthrough. I guess it'll be a race to see if I can finish it before my interest wanes, urgh.

Just wrote up a quick FAQ for Rollerblade Racer. Could've been the worst game I have ever played. =P The last level consisted of me holding left for about 5 seconds, pressing A. Then once I got on the sidewalk, I held up the rest of the way and beat it without falling. What a joke! =P

I'm still working on Championship Rally but this one will take a little bit, I'm mapping out each track and that takes time... I might FAQ some other quick driving games in the mean time.

But it's really just Adam's list a few posts up + Flash, do you want me to repeat it all? From Airborne Ranger to World Trophy Soccer, all gone.

Nothing else to report from my side, just old guides I'm working on.

We just had 700 incomplete games left, though with the unreleases games removed it's of course quite lower.
Contra Force needs to be put back up there, too bad.
Also I finally managed to get Buzz & Waldog added. There was some confusion in which region this was supposed to be released in...

For those of you who "enjoy" doing FAQs for Sachen games: While the standalone ROM for Chess Academy doesn't work in emulators, the version of the game on Super Cartridge #1 does. It's a very quick game, consisting of an infinite "exercise" mode and a match mode where you have to play three rounds of increasing difficulty. The game itself is a simplified version of four-player mahjong.

Another thing: The FAQ for Super Xevious is far from complete. That game has an ending and everything, but you sometimes have to do pretty obscure things to break out of the level loops. A walkthrough:

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown-Knight/7865/s-xevious-y.html

It's easier to follow with pictures, but for some reason the translated version won't display them. Just click on that "View Original Web Page" link to see them. (And be sure to press Ctrl-A on the translated page to see all the text.)

Pluvius, I had no idea Super Xevious had that much hidden stuff in it. I just thought it was one of those neverending, looping games. I don't want to FAQ it, but I'd love to use someone's FAQ to beat it. Definitely worthy of a guide. Who's claiming this one?

Mark me down for Motocross Champion.

Also: I think I've run into a speed bump in my personal goal of all driving games. The game Paris-Dakar Rally Special! is in Japanese. Normally that doesn't slow me down in racing games but this ones a bit different. It seems like an RPG where you have to walk around in the city. Is anybody decent enough in Japanese to figure out what to do? It would be even nicer if you could FAQ it yourself if you understand the game. ;)
