New: The Adventures of Dr. Franken

It's the same as the GB version (I think) but still quite a horrible game to play through from what I can tell. Thanks again to LostLevels for this treasure.

Sigh, I'm sad that Championship Rally and Jovial Race are empty circles. =( I guess I'll just have to map out every map for Championship Rally. However, I'm stuck on what I should do for a full circle for Jovial Race since there's no tracks or anything. Any suggestions?

Jovial Race has tracks, and the flags are always at the same position. It would be quite hard to map out though, perhaps there is another solution. Try to talk the player through every round, even if it's just a few sentences. Are there any particular tough parts about a round such as one-way trips that could be dangerous? Things like that. Not sure how many rounds there are.
Da Hui | Posted 2/21/2007 12:59:21 AM | message detail
I'm not sure how many tracks there are either. The game isn't really that difficult either, I can't possibly list descriptions of each level. =P That would be too much work and I'm going to have too much work for Championship Rally with mapping everything out. =\ Oh well, I'm adding in points for everything along with the HUD and stuff, hopefully everything I add for Jovial Race will be enough.

The SNES Dr. Franken is a pretty average game. I figured the NES version would be the same or worse.

Grr, CJayC is giving me no love on my Championship Rally and Jovial Race FAQs. =P Looks like he's asking for just a little more but I don't know what else to do!!! =\

Do the maps meng. The maps you did on that other racing game (Andretti's I think) were great. That would solidify the game's status as complete, at least to me. Maybe CJacC thinks differently. Perhaps a paypal donation would get you a full circle. I believe his paypal address is alamont1 at maine dot rr dot com ;)

Yeah, I sent money to him but he still hasn't replied... ;)

Anyways, I made all those maps in less than an hour because I just took screenshots and kind of played with them to make it just the track with a white background. Then I put it in a program that converts it to ASCii. In case you're wondering it's ASCGen, just google it if you want it. Since there's really no map layouts it would make me draw the maps out by hand and then drawing them in ASCii. It's really tedious and bothers me. I tried doing it that way and I could only do 5 maps in 4 days because it's really that tedious.

I ended up resubmitting them with comments mentioning that I included as much data about the games as I could possibly think of to make it full circle. I mentioned I'd be fine if it wasn't full circle, but to at least tell me what else to add. CJayC probably just didn't want to deal with me anymore and just put them up as full circles. =P

Shingen's coming along pretty smooth, it won't be too big and the nature of the game allows it to be a very free-form strategy guide rather than walkthrough. Most of the combat section is done now.

Really, the only thing holding me up is playing through the game, which takes a considerable amount of time - but I need to make an account of random events anyways. Also I need to actually have his heir be born and take over this time, no clue how long that will take.

I've been playing through Star Force lately because I remember a tip in an issue of Gamepro that told how to find a Cleopatra icon late in the game. The FAQ on this site kind of mentioned it, but it was worded kind of strangely.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/game/587646.html

I then searched online for the manual and found this:

http://www.atarihq.com/tsr/manuals/starforce.txt

There are a ton of cool secrets in this game, none of which are covered in the "FAQ." The guy could have at least paraphrased the manual rather than transcribe the fabulous Engrish contained within.

There was a dude on NES General a few months ago asking about the Cleopatra secret.

Man, I'd have never thought something like that would be in Star Force. But when your life-start jingle is best on the NES, anything is possible.

Shmups especially could have secrets hidden amongst their arcana. It's just that we don't think to look for it due to what kind of game they are. Even weird little mechanics such as the strip of air that consumes less fuel than others in Formation Z or other little quirks just aren't explored in these games because they're assumed to be base.

Something like the Cleopatra secret would be an exceptional discovery for someone to make while writing a guide for a game like Star Force, barring any hacking tricks, where the waves and terrain are seemingly random.

The FAQ doesn't make much sense. I think it needs a better guide, along with something to explain what the "ultra techiques" and "seven mysteries" are. Those parts don't make any sense at all.
adaml | Posted 2/25/2007 9:59:37 PM | message detail
That whole FAQ is pretty much the game's manual with a couple things added to it.

I found some info online about the arcade version of Star Force. It said Cleopatra is hidden to the right of a fish skeleton in one of the later stages. I never came across this skeleton. Another piece of info said that you can finish some stages faster by performing certain tasks within the stages. If you trigger this the boss of the stage (whatever greek letter you are on) appears quicker. My guess is that I got to the Cleopatra stage and triggered the boss appearance before hitting the section where Cleo was hidden. I will probably play through the game again at some point and try not to blast too much stuff so the stages are "extended" in hopes of coming across that fish skeleton.

One of the earliest issues of Gamepro told what you had to do to get the Cleopatra icon to appear in its tips section, but I cannot find it now :(

adaml | Posted 2/25/2007 11:49:09 PM | message detail
Ha, I figured it out. Cleopatra can be found on ANY level, if you have the patience. It is true that the more stuff you blast the quicker the level boss appears. However, if you are skillful enough to evade enemies without really shooting stuff, or just let the end of the level boss get by you without killing it, the level will just keep going. Eventually you will get to a pink area. Now keep in mind there are a couple stages that start you out pretty close to the pink area (like Stage 19, Tau), but if you last long enough in every stage, you will see every color background the game has to offer.

The unique thing about the pink areas is that there will be these reddish colored pools in the background. When you first get to the pink sections it will look like any other background, then you will fly by a couple blue colored islands, then back to the pink area. Keep flying, keeping to the right side of the screen when possible. It won't be until near the end of the pink area (you will know you are close when the reddish pools are appearing on the right center part of the screen) that you will have to hug the right side of the screen and keep shooting. Your bullets will start hitting an invisible object that will turn into the Cleopatra icon. Now quickly blast the icon and you will actually get a message screen right there in the middle of the stage. After the message you will then continue on through the level until you finish it.

Finding this does not give you a better ending. You still get the same ending message that says "Information from Tecmo" and tells you to look forward to Super Star Force (which only came out in Japan and is a lot like The Guardian Legend, by the way...could use a FAQ, wink, wink). You get this message after Stage 24 (called Omega) and then you keep playing, but every stage is thereafter is called Infinity.

If the author of the Star Force manual...err, FAQ, wants to use this info in their guide, feel free.

Wow, that's an awesome update on Star Fighter. I owned this cart when I was younger (probably still do somewhere) and beat this game without ever thinking a secret like that would exist. Great job, and please at least submit that info as a code so it's not lost.

Also, I finished and submitted a FAQ for Raid 2020 today. It was a terrible game, so glad it's now off the Completion List. Hopefully it will go up during the updates tomorrow.

Nice job everyone with all these guides lately. It seems like there has been a real surge in interest and it's a great thing to see.

Awesome find. My brother used to scroll the backgrounds on forever, but I didn't think that could be used to find something like this. Figured it would instead mess up the terrain colour of where you wanted to find it, so later when you arrived you'd be out of luck.

Yeah, I'll submit it as a secret tonight. I wish the author of the Star Force FAQ would have delved deeper into the game...at least under the surface of it. There are all kinds of hidden bonuses, like if you destroy that one enemy before his 4 parts connect to him, you get a 50000 pt bonus. Hard to do, but they definitely reward you for it.

That Raid 2020 guide is awesome...probably better than the game deserves, but you pretty much cover it all. I never even knew going to the subscreen would sometimes bring enemies onscreen after returning to the game. I spent a lot of time wandering around trying to find enemies to kill to move on to the next stage. That guide will spare a lot of headaches and frustrations for anyone trying to beat the game.

Gem, I played through Star Soldier a year or so ago. The only thing I found was that there was a second quest that was different from the first. I'll have to track down the manual to see if it alludes to any hidden stuff.

Also, the Star Force secret I submitted was "Rejected", saying "Not a cheat." This could be one of the biggest secrets hidden in an NES game, but it doesn't qualify as a secret I guess. Looks like the secret dies when this thread gets purged :(

Great work with all the guides lately. Armadillo was also upgraded to full. I looked through the rest of half-circle guides and I think that's about it now. I contacted some people but I suppose if a guide is not updated for over 4 years it is most likely dead. The only person replying was about Ultimate Air Combat which he says will be done eventually.

I was planning to FAQ Ganbare Goemon 2 myself soon anyway.

I submitted Blodia Land just now. For an encore I want to write for Joshua this month. However, I've found a lot of other old school projects I like so I don't know if NES will be a priority for me.

Still, there are some fun games to write for out there I'm sure.

Alright, for some reason every time I submit my game endings guide all the new games are over 80 characters per line. How do I make sure this doesn't happen in a .txt document?

Line 5942: 81 characters wide(trailing spaces)
Line 5944: 81 characters wide(trailing spaces)
Line 5945: 81 characters wide

Line 5950: 83 characters wide

Line 5980: 81 characters wide(trailing spaces)
Line 5981: 81 characters wide(trailing spaces)
Line 5983: 81 characters wide(trailing spaces)
Line 6510: 83 characters wide

Line 6517: 83 characters wide
Line 6551: 82 characters wide
Line 6552: 83 characters wide
Line 6554: 83 characters wide
Line 6556: 83 characters wide
Line 6557: 82 characters wide
Line 6560: 81 characters wide(trailing spaces)

This trailing spaces thing is new also. I run the entire guide through this site http://faqs.ign.com/format_faq.html which is supposed to conform any text to 79 characters per line but it is apparently not working for me.

Any advice would be appreciated. Updating my guide shouldn't be a chore.

I'm back after a long hiatus and ready to write some guides.

Looking through the list I see Mighty Bomb Jack doesn't have a guide yet, so could you put me down for that one? Hopefully I can get through that game again in the coming week and write a walkthrough up for it in the next two.

As for my outstanding claim to Mugen Senshi Valis, the guide (and maps) I currently have for the game only go about a third of the way into it and I don't know if I'll ever finish it. I simply have no desire to ever touch that game again.

The FAQ for Ultima: Warriors of Destiny doesn't seem to directly apply to the NES version at all apart from the Game Genie codes; it's basically just another FAQ for the PC version. I haven't played much of it yet, but I've already noted a couple of glaring differences:

-The method for getting the sextant is very different. In fact, in the NES version it's really, really easy. (Hint: Walk out of Iolo's hut, then back in.)

-The coordinate system used in the NES version is different, being more like a real system using numbers and cardinal directions.

Both Empath Abbey and Yew also seem to be a lot smaller, but I can't totally confirm that since parts of both are blocked off by doors.

This version of Ultima V is awful, BTW. Some of the laggiest controls I've ever seen, and the interface is inefficient and confusing for a controller with only four buttons and a directional control. The sad part is that it uses an engine similar to U6's, meaning that there are no separate maps for the world or for battle for one thing. It could've been a lot better is what I'm trying to say.

Thanks a bundle Pluvius.

So, I should just keep running the clock until Shingen dies? So the game has a time limit but it's exceptionally long o_O.

I guess Is hould just sample 10 times the effect of $100 on commands that Katsuyori effects before and after Shingen's death the note any change in the average quantity gained/dropped.

I stuck this up on youtube a little earlier:
