NES FAQ Completion Project, Part 6

Those Sanrio games are pretty good. Are the Kero Kero Keroppi games for the Famicom related to Sanrio is some way? They seem similar in character design and stuff like that.

I'd say probably, given Keroppi is a Sanrio character. I like the Sanrio games because they have some challenge, but they are not going to crush you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanrio

for a rundown of other characters. Sanriotown.com and sanrio.com have more information on the other characters and their backgrounds. Minna no Tabou(Tabo) is another one who had an NES game that got translated. People do tend to translate the Sanrio games because, well, they like Sanrio.

NES Sanrio Carnival had no translation but it was similar to the GB version, and odino helpfully translated a screen showing a code, so that worked out. Also, it has some Sanrio characters who lost popularity and aren't seen much any more, which is kind of cool and kind of sad.

AShultz, your Airball and Tobbin' FAQ's are missing a full circle. Something might be up with the system, but I don't know.

.As far as I can see, both of them have full circles... (was probably fixed just in the latest update)

And ASchultz, I had looked through the incomplete list yesterday and randomly tried out Sanrio Carnival. And just today you already post the FAQ for it! :-)

I think I even found a small error... :

In the second example for a 2-Chain of chapter 3-7. 50 CHAINS, the placement of the dropping element
a
v
looks off (the 'a' on top of the 'b' wouldn't do anything). Shouldn't it fall two columns further right (with an additional block in between, above the 'c')?

Or maybe I just didn't get things right...

Sanrio Cup...tried it, it's fun, and it's translated too! I might knock that off this weekend. Though I have some work to do. I lost 2-10 to Keroppi in my first match.

Lagoona, your edit makes sense and looks good. It's best to have this noted right away, before the FAQ gets stale.

llamaman2, you weren't seeing things. I just got around to filing my own problem reports against stuff I miscategorized when I submitted it. I often tend to do the easy stuff wrong in general.

It'll be cool to see the next update at retronintendo. I think we've finished about least ten FAQs all told since then. Soon the # of FAQs left will be less than the # done.

Good to see you back Devin! I figured it was exams/vacation. You've been super quick so often with updates, I think we all understand.

I double checked through the recent postings and Gemerl's King Kong 2 ikari no megaton can also be moved to the completed list.

But no rush of course--you can just add it if/when my Sanrio Cup guide is successfully posted..

I'd like to thank ASchultz for that Locksmith FAQ (and all of his other FAQs that I've used, of course); that game is pretty easy if you understand how the puzzle works. Now I'm down to ten on my NES/Famicom completion pile.

BTW, I went ahead and submitted the cheat code you get at the end of Locksmith, if you don't mind.

What you do is visit the project's website (it's in my signature) and find a game that is on the incomplete list, then write a FAQ for it. For your FAQ to be counted towards the actual project, you will have to let us know in this topic that it is your intention to be part of the NES project. Simple enough, right?

I guess the formal GB/GBC project looks like it is folding for good. It's helped me look at a few games I'd have missed otherwise, but unfortunately it never got traction like this did. Maybe if this project dries up, we can focus more on those, because I bet there are some great games waiting to be found.

Rob, no problem about the code. I'm just glad it's up there. I enjoyed working out the Locksmith puzzles, and I'm glad the guide worked for you, but once done I really wanted to see the back of the game. Feel free to point out any other games you might want a guide for, with a brief description too--that might give someone here the boost they need to write a guide.

On another note...I'd like to reserve Magic Cube. After I take care of my first Famicom game. The sub-thread here reminded me of something.

.Hey Andrew, either odino is suggesting the same games to the two of us or it's just a big coincidence. I've already been looking at Magic Block a bit, too. But I decided to work on something else than another puzzle game first. :-)

Anyway - have fun with Magic Block.

And by the way, did you have a look at Poke Block once? (Another similar one odino suggested once.)

odino | Posted 12/5/2007 4:47:02 AM | message detail
Not sure its a coincidence as it's been mentioned here a few times. Unfortunately we are still in plenty of supply of Sachen puzzlers ;)

One game I could have mentioned before is "Chiisana Obake". It's quite good and has a translation available. You basically play this little ghost with a rope and you wrap it around blocks to retrieve the item inside the block. As you progress the area becomes more complex and there are enemies too. Additional items help you out such as a turbo boost and a longer rope to wrap several blocks in one go.

Apart from working on the Igo (Go) games I am doing a small platformer. Shouldn't take too long.
awutow15 | Posted 12/5/2007 9:18:24 AM | message detail
Are there any games on the list in a European language other than English?

i.e., I could write for a game in French with no problem. With enough work, I think I can do guides in German and Spanish as well. I've always wanted to write a foreign language FAQ. =D

All games are either English or Japanese. The only ones were available in Europe in a foreign language were already fan translated eons ago, and I think that's only Banana Prince and Saint Seiya.

I think that because of its very limited success, I may just delink the GB/GBC projects and let my site be exclusively for the NES project once again. I will save the other project pages and update them as needed, but seeing that the project really isn't being supported, I may as well let it sit in the back burner. Any thoughts?

It may be wise just to keep it there for when this project finishes (it shouldn't be too long now). Even if you don't edit it at all, don't get rid of it.
Pluvius | Posted 12/5/2007 2:58:10 PM | message detail
The only NES game I could use a FAQ for is Super Donkey Kong, which I got stuck on fighting one of the bosses. But that might just be because it's a buggy piece of gray-market trash.

If you guys extend this project to the FDS, though, I'd definitely like to see a FAQ for the original Eggerland. There are also two Lode Runner games that need FAQs, plus a game in the Famimaga series called "All One," where you have to roll dice around a playing field so that they all show snake-eyes.

Rob
Gemerl | Posted 12/5/2007 3:10:22 PM | message detail
Well, I've already FAQed Eggerlad Mystery on the MSX and was moving onto Eggerland: Souzouhe no Tabidachi (FDS) soon. I was going to do Revival! Eggerland after that but I may do Eggerland and get these consoles over with.

Something tells me Eggerland Mystery 2 is virtually the same as Eggerland except the FDS game has 20 some more levels? I'll check it out and maybe do them simultaneously.

"All One" sounds like Devil Dice, which I enjoyed on the PlayStation. I also played Q*Bert's Qubes, which is similar. But throwing it on my list might be too much at once.

Because in the yet-another-coincidence-we-have-here-lately department, I have the Super Lode Runner FAQ 2/3 finished and currently in the queue & want to hit SLR2 before the year is up. I'd wanted to write for a FDS game this year. Turns out they have some interesting levels, especially SLR2, and the AI works unusually.

For the GB/GBC, delinking seems good for the moment. This project can't last forever--in fact if we keep cranking out 3 games a week, it won't take more than 3 more years to wipe the list clean. Then we'll need something else to keep us busy :).

Thanks to Lagoona's idea I sat down and wrote down a short guide for the first of many Igo teaching games. It's only 4kb but should cover everything. Already working on the 2nd and unless one of the later "games" is much different they should be done quickly.

Next I need to learn Shogi I guess :D

For the record, the Super Lode Runner games each have a two-player mode with unique cooperative levels. AFAIK, this is a peculiarity unique to those versions of Lode Runner.

Tear the roof off this sucker. Can't let it get too far down there.

When I finish Contra 4 I'll probably pick a NES title to FAQ.

Someone might want to take a look at Wagyan Land 3. Seems to be a pretty accessible platformer. There's minigames at the end of levels though, card matching and memory games or something.

WL3 isn't translated, but I suppose these days I could try the Japanese matching game. If it's anything like WL2 then it's quite tough as you have to match similar sounding words. Yet right now I have no desire to play that game, still need to go over WL2 for some extra routes. There are multiple paths to take and it got quite complicated to write up.

Did a quickie for Super Dyna'mix Badminton though. With Adam's cheats this was actually possible to beat - else I don't see how :o
adaml | Posted 12/11/2007 5:53:19 PM | message detail
That Badminton game is demonic, isn't it. I'm glad you're knocking out a FAQ for it, but I'd like to meet the person that can play through that game without cheating. It is harder than the original Volleyball NES game. I played it again for about 10 minutes today and still could not get one past the opponent. I must be missing something, perhaps a controller move that actually lets you hit it past him or something.

How is Bugette Honey going?

Pluvius, thanks for mentioning All One. It was enjoyable, and the FAQ should be up today. Super Lode Runner 2 is a lot harder than the 1st, though it has fewer levels.

Some FDS games you might like:
- Hong Kong
- Panic Space
- Clocks
- Knight Move
- Kineko I & II
- Puzzle Boys (this reminds me of a GameBoy game that is almost the same)

There is also a Transformer game by the same people who made the NES one.
Pluvius | Posted 12/14/2007 8:48:53 PM | message detail
Something about All One that's unimportant but interesting: If you turn all of the dice over to show a number besides one, weird things will happen depending on the number you chose. It's easiest to see this on the first level.

BTW, Panic Space has already been done.

Hey Adam, I've got some bad news about Electrician. You have to beat it like eight times to get the real ending, because you have to go through special versions of each of the underground stages and there doesn't seem to be a way to get into more than one per loop. There's a Japanese website somewhere that gives more specific details.

Pluvius, if this is some kind of practical joke to make me play through the game 7 more times...it worked. Thanks for the heads up. I would have never thought this game would have multiple quests, so that's good to know. Looks like my final update of that guide for 2007 will not be the final after all.

You know, Knight Lore is an FDS game I thought would be right up Andrew Schultz's alley. It is like Airball and Solstice, except you are a knight.

Pluvius, I just played through Electrician again and it was exactly the same as the first go around, even the ending. Is there something you need to do to trigger the different underground areas? I'll see if I can't find the website you mentioned. Some of these old Famicom/FDS games have some weird criteria you have to meet to get past certain areas (Tower of Druaga sticks out).

You sure about Electrician? I remember some website with lots of info but it would be quite annoying to play through 8 times.

Did a quick FAQ for Mottomo Abunai Deka, I don't know if this game is playable without cheating but it's possible this was never dumped properly.
Pluvius | Posted 12/16/2007 5:04:45 PM | message detail
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://nanamori.hp.infoseek.co.jp/Kaihou/Elect/Elect.htm

I know it's not a joke because I've seen the ending myself. The underground levels that are on the other side of the disk are the special levels. I forget how you trigger the special levels, but as you can see from the walkthrough you only get to play one level per loop. Hopefully you won't get into the trap like I did where it kept triggering the same secret level every time I looped.
