NES FAQ Completion Project Part 7

odino | Posted 9/29/2008 9:44:15 AM | message detail
Just e-mailed you the rough script but it appears some stuff may not be in there either. Have a look first though, it will hopefully clear up a lot.

odino thanks for the offer for help to translate stuff from Metal Max. This is a just a sample of some of the screenshots I've taken.

I don't need the main menu commands translated since they have been already done as shown in the first two links. The partial English translation has nonsense for the Japanese text which is why I've had to go back to the original for these screenshots. However I think it will be too much for me to attempt since there are tons of different shops and items in the game aside from all the other dialogue and enemies etc. all of which would need translation. It might be possible for me to play the game, but not to FAQ it. Anyway see what you think. Or anyone else who might be interested.

You are right about the shops, there must be tons and this is quite tedious. Items and Enemies are usually translated quickly. Either from a game-dump or there might even be a list on these great sites:
http://metalmaniax.com
http://www.h3.dion.ne.jp/~roias/mm/mm.htm

So the question is, are the shops always so different or do they always have similar commands for what you can do there? For example, the first screen has these choices:
*Ammunition
*Armor Tile(?)
*Exit Store

You know the game already from MMR, is this enough info to get through? I could have a closer look at the text inside the game if you are that interested.
threetimes | Posted 9/30/2008 7:13:26 AM | message detail
Hey thanks for that link to the CyberWolf site. I didn't know about that one, and I had forgotten about MetalManiax. So pretty much all the info on everything is there on those two sites and it appears to be nearly identical to MMR so far as I can tell.

The shops options would be the same for everywhere, and I suppose if I used MMR as the basis for my info then I could make a stab at it. But I'm not sure how much use that would be unless I used the English translation as the basic game and detailed the options which are not translated from the Japanese game - with some help!

Not sure about whether all items you find are the same though, so there would be a lot of checking to do, and I couldn't even work out how to run away from battle which is essential at some points in the game. Dunno if I could manage it really as it would mean playing both versions of the game in tandem. Anyhow I'd appreciate any advice about this, and what you guys think would be needed for a FAQ. Thanks.

odino | Posted 9/30/2008 8:45:43 AM | message detail
It shouldn't be hard to translate the battle and shop menus, possibly include those in the existing translation. Most games will store the items and enemies in blocks so they can all be translated in advance as well. I will have a look at the code in the next few days.

Basically you are saying with everything but the NPC dialogue you will be ok to get through this?
ASchultz | Posted 9/30/2008 2:05:56 PM | message detail
Odino, thanks for the translation help. I need to get back to you on the game you asked me about. Now I need to sort through my emails for the past few months.

By the way, does anyone here have an RPG they wrote for the completion topic that they might like to see maps for? I might have fun trying...so far, I'm having fun with the Elysion maps.

threetimes | Posted 10/1/2008 7:30:13 AM | message detail
odino thanks again. Does that mean you could actually insert those items lists and options into the English translation? That would be brilliant if possible.

The shop options might not be so simple though, as there are different kinds of buying options. There are tank rental shops, and vending machines, and repair garages which have different options to the normal tank or equipment shops, and MMR has tank mod shops too though I'm not so sure if MM does or not. (I managed to work the rental one at least. ) It may all be a bit too much to deal with, at least for the purposes for making a decent FAQ for the game. Anyhow I'll wait and see what you think.

And I forgot to say that Armour Tiles is correct. ^_^

After all this talk, it turns out the game uses compression :( The only thing I can offer is translate screenshots when you are stuck with items and so on, but I guess this would be pretty annoying to get through...
Devin Morgan | Posted 10/2/2008 12:13:28 AM | message detail
Is there a way around the compression issue, or does that go beyond the scope of the current techniques? >_<

I don't know what that means, but I guess it's not good news. Oh well, thanks for trying odino. I'll see how far I can get playing the game blind, but i guess a FAQ (by me at any rate) is out of the question. :(

Oh there are ways around, but they are beyond my abilities and most people will not touch it for that reason alone. It would take someone with experience to step forward and figure out the text replacements.

I'm starting to work on Super Black Onyx. I have 3 of the 8 areas mapped(it's a map that scrolls vertically, horizontally AND up/down, so it has the appearance of 60 levels.) I may have some trouble figuring what to do so I may ask for help translating a page later.

To bump, sort of, I just want to check that it's not fair game to submit a guide for an RPG where you have a hex cheat that makes 1 player invulnerable?

I guess what I'm saying here is, with odino's help translating Bard's Tale 2, I know where to go, who to fight and in what order. But I don't understand much more of the game than "There are stairs up/down here. Take them?"

But again, good progress even if no guides are completed.

Cool, I look forward to seeing a Bard's Tale 2 guide. I'm sure I will probably cheat my way through the game as well as use the guide :)

Has anyone gotten into the game Haja no Fuuin? There is no translation available for the game but I am wondering just how similar it is to the SMS game Miracle Warriors. It is supposedly the same game but I've never really heard anyone talk about it.

Hooray Gemerl! Looks like IceQueenZer0 got an unusual game up too, which is good to see.

Odino's translations have made Deep Dungeon 4 possible even with a broken translation patch. I managed to map out the small treasure dungeon there. But I still have Bards Tale II and Super Black Onyx floating around despite having guides for them.

I just figured out the dumb thing I'd overlooked in Bard's Tale 2. It will be up tomorrow once I grind the solution out. Many thanks to odino for his translation work on the game. Without it, I'd never have been able to solve a port of one of my favorite computer games of all time. I'd been curious as to what was different.

I will work on Kujaku Ou soon.

Going through the A-games I noticed Ai Sensei no Oshiete has a complete guide, and that I should work on Atlantis no Nazo if Pseudo is really giving up on it.

Did you actually receive the attachment? Was having some trouble with the upload. I forgot about Lagoona being able to help there, that would probably be better for the Intro and the Edit mode, should you still want it. Some of that Denglish in that manual was probably translated from Japanese with google/babelfish :)

By the way, who's up for next TC?
Devin Morgan | Posted 11/26/2008 9:11:52 PM | message detail
As of right now, my candidates would be either Lagoona or Darkstar Ripclaw. Would love for DEngel to do it if he's still lurking about and interested in doing so...

Lagoona (or DEngel if you are reading this) - Would either of you be willing to create the next topic when this one closes? I would like to have this sorted out before the current topic actually closes, so the gap between topics is minimized...

Also, odino, do you still need the shogi guide I made which you used? Just wondering if I should keep it uploaded or not...

I have a feeling I'll be FAQing a lot more soon. I have a final today and 2 finals next week, then I have a good month and a half break. To top that off, they're cutting my hours basically in half in the middle of January which sucks. But until I find a new job to cover weeknights, I'll probably FAQ a bit. Last night I started a FAQ on Magic Carpet 1001, I don't have plans on FAQing the 6-in-1 game right now but if somebody else is interested, they are free to use my Magic Carpet FAQ once I finish.
