NES FAQ Completion Project Part 7

Gemerl | Posted 2/15/2008 1:54:20 AM | message detail
You're probably best looking for a Famicom Capture site or something using the original text for the title.

Tool based vids are a rotten example when luck is explicitly involved - they cheat luck. I'm sure it will offer some insight, but there's potentially other targets that drop keys or some unknown variable involved there.

I haven't really played the game or else I'd have something a little more helpful.

It seems like the key is random, so Gem is more than likely correct about the manipulation of luck for those speed runs.

The FAQ I inadvertently stole from Odino finally has a full circle next to it. I guess I better read through the messages here instead of the website when looking for unclaimed FAQs :) Sorry man. I noticed I claimed Gaiapolis a few years ago, so I guess I will finally work on that one now.

Heh thanks for the guides but I just figured out most of the things done in that video. There are apparently some hidden portals that are the only way to get to some islands because I tried finding other ways and I couldn't figured it out except for those hidden portals in that video. At the moment I'm at the last castle in the game so I'm almost done with the actual walkthrough part. The only part that's left is trying to figure out what two of the spells do. Does anybody know what the spells do? It's the third and fourth spells I need, they look like a bubble and a sort of test tube, both after the fire ball on the spell list. I'm sure I'll finish the walkthrough tonight and I finished the rest of the sections. If anybody knows what those two spells do it would be greatly appreciated. =D

Sigh, more problems with this game. =\

Has anybody ever beaten Legend of Valkyrie? I got to the last boss and kill him but he keeps respawning. I guess you're supposed to kill him until an item drops. I have the item and I try to use it and it doesn't do anything. Anybody have any idea what to do? In the video the guy looks like he gets the item to drop and uses it and the game is over but it won't let me use it. I tried using it exactly where he was and then exactly where I found it and still nothing. Any ideas?

adaml | Posted 2/15/2008 9:24:31 PM | message detail
Da Hui, nice work getting that far in that game. Maybe you need to be at a certain experience level to beat the boss? If you are using those hex codes for experience, sometimes messing with experience addresses can actually be detrimental, as it may look like you have the experience, yet it might not actually be registering that you are at that experience level. Kinda hard to explain.

SMX, I must always have two FAQs reserved, kinda like how there must always be two Sith. Since Silver Eagle got done, Robodemons stepped in. Speaking of Robodemons, Gemerl, I rented that game right after I returned Silent Assault to the video store (you'll know what I am talking about if you read through the Silent Assault FAQ). I always kinda group the 2 games together, so I might as well FAQ them both.

Odino, let me know what guide you plan on doing next so I can hurry up and FAQ it tonight. Just kidding. ;)

I actually started playing Gaiapolis a bit today and think I will definitely get a FAQ done for it in the coming weeks/months.

I thought of that Adam and just maxed out my XP. When I went to an inn it leveled me to 99 and it looks like it cycles over to level 1 and keeps going from there. The video only has the character on level 6 and even with mine cycling over, it still appears as level 8 so I don't think that's the problem. This sucks though, I'm literally at the last step of the game and know there's only one more thing to do but it won't work for me. =(

Copied from awhile back;

odino | Posted 8/2/2007 10:33:19 PM | message detail
So there are three more HES games:

Mindblower Pak (Math Quiz, Jackpot, Arctic Adventure, Galactic Crusader)
Total Funpak (Pac man, Sidewinder, Duck Maze & Othello)
Funblaster Pak (Pipemania, Twin Eagle, Metal Fighter and Little Red Hood)

We could probably get it partly linked from existing guides (so nobody has to play though Little Red Hood again).

Total Funpak could be done now, Funblaster Pak would require Pipemania to be done. I don't know whether Math Quiz/Arctic Adventure are separate games but under different names or soemthing, so Mindblower Pak would be troublesome (and Jackpot was done by PianoChampion, whose methods of contact are, well, less than conspicuous).

Or not in regards to Arctic Adventure and Math Quiz.

Arctic Adventure = Arctic Adventure: The Penguin and Seal

Math Quiz = Magic Mathematics (I don't know this, but I'm putting my money on it since it's only one of two 'math' games for the NES, and again originally published by Sachen)

Devin, sent, check your e-mail for 'spam' ;)

Math Quiz is Magical Mathematics, and Arctic Adventure is also Penguin and Seal. When someone finishes up Pipemania (a.k.a. Pipe V) we can write a feedback ticket to link the guides.

As for multicarts that aren't just compilations, would it be complete if there are individual guides for each multicart game (such as Quattro Arcade, 6-in-1) or should we still have a general file to cover it properly?
brian sulpher | Posted 2/16/2008 1:25:31 AM | message detail
Needs a general file I would wager... I want to see each game with a listed full FAQ if at all possible.

Thanks for that video. I compared the two and came to the conclusion that you must have that cloak and helmet equipped to use the key. I lost the helmet from the thieves in the middle of the game so I restarted and got the helmet and cloak and sure enough, it worked! Finally beat this stupid game. Now all I need to do is figure out what two of the spells do which I can't figure out at all, or just ditch the whole magic spell section for the time being.

Since odino mentioned it (isn't this a recurring theme Adam? :P), I decided to look into the game of Shogi. I'm not working on a particular Famicom game at the moment, but I am writing up a guide of sorts on how to play (what the pieces are, how you move, etc). It could be used as a template that others in this topic can borrow if they wish to do their own FAQs for the various Shogi games. I'll post a link to it when I finish it. :)

Sorry for the double post, but I believe I have finished my template for how to play Shogi. Here it is if anyone is interested in taking a look. If you actually plan on writing for any of these games on the NES, you can use this data directly, just give credit where due!

There is S-JIS formatting on the page, just so you know. And, if there is anything more I should add, let me know as well.

Ms Pac-Man Tengen should beat the monday FAQ rush and be posted. Another good weekend for us, it looks like...

Space Medafighter X, sorry I didn't respond earlier--I forgot. I don't know about Bard's Tale 2 for the NES. I do, however, know the Apple version very well, and perhaps even if there is a lot of Japanese, it would be workable.

But then it took me a while to get around to Wizardry III, which I also played while in HS and which was even translated. I have no clue if my Apple/PC maps work for the NES, but I bet it could be verified pretty quickly.

Even with that, I might need help. Who knows, maybe working with a coauthor who understands the screenshots that have Japanese text, we could get through the game pretty quickly. It would be interesting to go through.

But for now, I am looking seriously at Pizza Pop.

That NWC 1990 FAQ is great. I wonder why no one's done a tool-assisted video of that game yet.

I've played most of the games on that list, and I'd have to say that the best one is probably either Defenders of Dynatron City or Micro Machines. So those would be my recommendations.

Rob
Gemerl | Posted 2/20/2008 1:15:56 AM | message detail
I'll probably be doing Seicross and Silk Worm in the future, but I'd feel greedy to claim 4 at once.

Anyone really familiar with DonDokoDon? The reason being is that I played through the arcade game again and the ending mentions that the king isn't rescued. I managed to find a key in one stage but I lost the bonus round (this particular bonus round seemed specifically geared towards extra men anyways based on the end of round tally).

As for the NES game, I wrote the first ten rounds today, so that's 40 to go pending any insight into a "happy end" for it. I scoured a number of Japanese sites to no avail.

Also, I think you forgot Karate Champ on that list. Another lemon but it would be easy to write for. You'd have to formulate strategy and the manual tells you all the commands and scoring info if you're inclined to look.

A guide for Karate Champ would probably be about as big as my Yie Ar guide. Of course you could be counting its arcade FAQ. It's probably not much different, but probably different enough that a NES perspective would be nice.

And the google translation...
Hart, spades, diamonds, clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades, clubs and enter

This related to exactly what I was doing in the bonus round, hmmm. Can anyone give me an idea of HOW to activate this from that site?

How did I activate it? I hit some enemy's shield with my hammer a few times and a key popped out and when I grabbed it a door opened. No idea why brother. No idea.

I'm not TOO familiar with the game, all I know is that there are 50 reverse rounds to rescue the King as well. Since I haven't beaten the game I can't help you much in finding it, but from what I have read you can activate a door in Level 1 by hitting something (a platform). In that "secret room" you must hit the right sequence before the time runs out. This has nothing to do with the other bonus rounds you mentioned.

Devin, 'Ninja Kun' is still on the list of incompletes but I think it means one of the complete ones under different names.

Thanks odino, 50 reverse rounds from level 1 eh? I'll investigate. The other bonus rounds had me picking card suits but the ending screen looked like they aligned them on a 9x9 grid and awarded lives.

I'll look in both the arcade and nes games because the nes game has some different levels and some changed levels form what I can tell.
