NES FAQ Completion Project Part 8

FecalLord | Posted 12/23/2008 7:28:12 PM | message detail
This is the 8th edition of the NES FAQ Completion Project. The goal of the project is to have a full circle guide for every single game that is listed in the NES database.

The project started in May 2004 and has had amazing success completing a total of 555 FAQs. This leaves 370 games left to cover at last count.

The project site can be found at: http://faqs.retronintendo.com/

Really great work by everyone involved so far! Let's keep up the pace well into the new year.

I really want to help out on this, but I do not have a NES. If there is anyway I can help please email me(anyone who can help!), my email is in my contributor page.

BTW, if no one is working on it yet I MAY be able to do the 5-1 game(or 6-1? Forget which...).

As usual, the previous topic will be prepared to be archived on the project site within the next day or so.

As far as working on a project for this system... I am undecided at the moment. Maybe I will jump on something pretty soon, being that I just graduated university and have more free time (aside from the job hunt that is).

One of the games on 6-in-1 is Magic Carpet 1001, which I just FAQed in the past week. Feel free to just copy paste it into your guide if you make one, just give me some credit. You can even change the format around on it to fit the rest of your guide, I don't really care too much. If you choose not to FAQ the game, this offer also goes out to anybody else who would be interested in FAQing it in the future. Don't even give me co-author, I don't want it.

By the way, does anybody have any suggestions for any decent games that don't require reading Japanese to beat? I don't care if there's Japanese in the game so long as I can still kind of figure out what's going on, but it seems at this point as if I'm looking through the same dozen or so games and I really just don't want to FAQ any of them. =P

This reminds me to work on Paris-Dakar, also maybe you want to endure the pain of playing through Nepoleon Senki as I translate menus? The game is still brutal to win, I have to find some cheat codes...

How about:
Cycle Race
Fighting Road
Game Party
Kanshakudama Nage Kantarou no Toukaidou Gojuusan Tsugi (translated)
Layla
Nagagutsu o Haita Neko
Noah's Ark
Space Shadow
Stick Hunter
Woody Poko

just throw a few ideas around.

Wasn't there a guide for Hercules no Eikou before?! hmmmm

I just submitted a FAQ for Destination Earthstar. I was working on one for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but it was just too difficult to write a walkthrough for, so I'll leave that one for someone else ...

Good Luck with the remainder of the project!

Alright well since The Admiral and Hyrulian seem like they have the Wheel of Fortune FAQ in hand, I've played a little of Quarterback Scramble and I think I can tackle it. I don't know any Japanese at all but I'm a big football fan and I think I have guessed what the options are when you have to choose something. There are only 6 teams so it shouldn't take me too long I don't think.

Also, is there a list of what Japanese games have translations of some sort available (games that actually NEED translations)? DSRC?

You know, I have tried Stick Hunter several times over the past year or so. I could never figure out the controls therefore couldn't play it. After seeing your post, I gave it another chance and tried to figure them out. I actually did and finished up a pretty quick FAQ for the game. =P I'm going to go ahead and reserve Game Party since that game is pretty interesting but I'm not sure when I'm going to start it. I got Fracture for PS3 from Gamefly and wanted to work on that for the bounty. I'll hopefully finish that one by the end of 2008 and hopefully start Game Party by then. It seems like one of those games that I might be able to FAQ while doing other stuff though, might work on it while I'm watching something on TV or something.

Figured I'd pop in before 2008 ended to let people know I wasn't dead (thanks for noticing Devin). Good to see this topic still going strong. I promised someone I'd update my game endings guide before the end of the year and just submitted an update.

Wish I could get back into gaming/writing more, but everyday life is holding me down presently. Hopefully I can fight/claw/scratch my way back in January!

Hooray for topic 8! I should be through Deep Dungeon 3 soon, but until then, there'll be another FDS game(Nazo no Murasamejou) done, for that unofficial completion project. With maps.

I'm considering learning how to write translation patches. Obviously I'd need someone with Japanese knowledge, but I think it would be a neat thing to do in 2009. One can only FAQ for so long...

Cosmic Epsilon never really needed a translation, not only because it was practically all in English anyway, but because it's just a shoot-'em-up in the vein of Space Harrier. It's also pretty good considering the limitations of the Famicom.

Has anybody played Game Party? I'm almost done writing a pretty basic FAQ for the game. I finished both hockey games and the basketball game. I understand the Mind-Q one and am working on it now. However, I am kind of confused by the Pinball game. It doesn't help that the game is incredibly buggy and glitchy, but I don't understand what the dinosaur on top is for. First, I tried to hit the ball down its mouth when it was open, it just bounces back. Then I figured, maybe I have to get the ball in its mouth as it was closing so it would hold it, again, it just bounced off. Then i hit those torches on the sides of the dinosaur. I figured out that if you hit the torch, it opens up the path and puts a portal at the end of that path. When you hit that portal, you can control a guy with a torch in front of the dinosaur. You can move the person left and right and throw the torch at the dinosaur. You can also catch it if you move where the torch is going and press A right when it reaches your hand. However, it doesn't seem to do anything. I don't know if it just adds points or if you're supposed to defeat the dinosaur. Does anybody have any idea?

After playing around in Game Party with the dinosaur, it seems like nothing happens. I sat there for about 20 minutes doing it over and over and nothing ever happened, so I submitted the FAQ as is. I finally came around to starting my Fracture FAQ for PS3 so that will take up most of my time for the next couple of days, but I'd like to reserve Layla, the game is pretty fun.

So, noone knows what happened to the Hercules no Eikou guide?

Asmik-Kun Land is a decent game btw, this is for DaHui or anyone who doesn't mind "some Japanese that isn't too important" :) There is even a part translation but I don't know if it is helpful. I think the minigames are easy enough to figure out without.

There is also 'Jurassic Boy'...it has only 5 levels.

I am wondering if there are any games that have tooo many differences between the US/EU and Japanese release. For example, NES Open Tournament Golf and Mario Open Golf have different holes. There is even a guide for just the Japanese release. Any others?

.I wouldn't know of any, but then again - I never actually compared...

And good work, guys. After something that could be called a small downtime, the FAQ seem to come rolling in again.

I, myself, am still slowly working on Paaman 2. I'll also do some more maps besides the guide, but I lack time at the moment...

I've started playing Mirai Shinwa Jarvas. Dunno if I will get very far though, so I'm not sure about a FAQ. So far the lack of an inn or cash from enemies is making progress slow. Anyone know if there is any info at all about it? Apart from a gameplay video I haven't found anything online yet.

Something else I noticed here:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/game/942618.html

All four separate games have now been covered. All that's left is making one file for all four games combined. I figured given who wrote the four FAQs, that a merge of sorts would be possible (Brian, Andrew, odino, RandyPandy). It would knock off another game from the incomplete list, at least. Thoughts?

I wouldn't mind that. There are only 2 co authors allowed, but perhaps we could have a general merged account for the NES completion project? And someone could write out any small controls for the cartridge proper?

I'll decline "official" coauthorship and allow my part of the guide to be added, if we need to go the co-author route. It'd be neat to knock a game off that way.

Oh, another Gegege no Kitaro 2 map done. The Japan map should follow shortly but will probably need an update...I think I must be halfway done with my guide, which I feel is pretty robust for how much of the game it covers thus far.

Compelted Layla. Not sure what my next project will be yet, but I think I will focus on my Fracture bounty, and I mean that this time. =P Anyway, assuming my Game Party FAQ and merc's Fuzzical FAQ gets accepted, that means 3 new FAQs should go up in the next update. =D

About that merge of the compilation FAQs, we should definately try it. Other similar games we can do the same thing for are Mindblower Pack (2 games FAQed by odino, one is pianochampion who doesn't have an e-mail, but we can try the last writer, TJackson) and also Funblaster Pack (merc will let somebody post his FAQ, I bet pietjepuk would allow it if somebody could come in contact with him, and we can try Sogetsu. To top it off, one of the games on that 4-in-1 is Pipemania which is just a Pipe Dream clone. Somebody here could FAQ that and they could allow a merge of FAQs for a general FAQ for that game. This is probably the best way to knock these games off, I wouldn't want to see somebody FAQ all these games that have already been FAQed before just to put it in a bigger FAQ for a 4-in-1. Maybe somebody could do one or two if one of the writers won't allow it, but it'd suck to redo every game.

The site already treats games with a full guide for each compilation entry as "complete", thus there is no need to merge anything. There is also no reason we cannot treat it as complete. We have discussed this before, it is different for a game like 6-in-1 where the games are not available individually.
As you said, Pipemania is still missing a guide, probably something for Andrew to do when he has time away from the important, bigger projects.
brian sulpher | Posted 1/2/2009 10:28:14 AM | message detail
If you want to go with a combined effort, single name FAQ, why not just create one and call it "NES CP"? That would cover things nicely methinks.

That's even easier. ;)

But anyway, what was our requirement for multi-platform games that have FAQs for the other consoles? I ask specifically because of Gemfire which is one of the two multi-platform games with a complete FAQ for a different system (the other is Karate Champ). TIDQ at least briefly mentions the NES version in the Preface and the way he describes it, there doesn't seem to be any difference between the SNES and NES version, aside from the obvious graphics and probably controls.

By the way, has anybody here played Airwolf (Japan)? I tried playing it, and I get through the first shooting level easily, but when I try fighting the boss in first person view, I cannot seem to do anything. Probably something wrong with your ROM or emulator.

After playing around a bit with Gemfire putting it side-by-side with a SNES emulator, it looks like it's the same game. The SNES seems to have more information about each character/family but the game works the same way. Each family's stats are even the same. I don't know if somebody else wants to look at it but to me, it seems as if the SNES guide would be good enough for the project.
