.NES FAQ Completion Project Part 9.

_Lagoona_ | Posted 9/4/2009 9:17:09 AM | message detail
.Another successful episode of the NES FAQ Completion Project is over with the 8th topic reaching 500. So here starts Part 9.

Since the project was started in May 2004 by Andrew Schultz a total of 627 NES games newly got a complete guide, and only about 290 are still in need of one. Overall, there are now 81.3% of all NES games covered! Excellent job, everyone!

Of the remaining ones, only a select few have been published outside Asia. These are (feel free to correct me):

Metal Mech: Man & Machine
The Miracle Piano Teaching System
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (Half-circle)
Tecmo World Cup Soccer
War in the Gulf

The remaining games will be harder to tackle just due to the fact that a lot of them require knowledge in Japanese. But every single one covered counts. Maybe by the end of this topic at least all US and EU games are done...

Last but not least, the project site can be found here: http://faqs.retronintendo.com/

Everyone's welcome to join and contribute to the project!

Continue onwards my cohorts, for the NES commands it! ~brian sulpher

Oh, Topic 9 already. I like how you put the . in your title :)

Da Hui, you mentioned there are no more Driving games left, but actually Cycle Race is "driving" just that the site lists these under Sport (On Foot is under Driving on the other hand, go figure).

In the last topic, there was a list of FAQ-able games. I am wondering if that list will be updated (and improved to include most (if not every) game that can be FAQed without requiring to learn a new language).

Just for everyone's knowledge, it was this post of Da Hui I was referring to:

Update of Da Hui's list

NOTE: This may not include other games that can be covered without knowledge of any language other than English, but at least it will remove games that have already been completed that was already on the list. I will also add all NA/EU games, as it would be quite stupid if games released in these countries did NOT have an English version of the game. The ones with *I ADDED THIS* are games that have been released in the US/EU that were not on this list, but I am certain does have an English Translation.

Asmik-Kun Land - Platformer
Baltron - Shooter, similar to Defender II
Chinese Kung-Fu: Challenge of the Dragon - Platformer, similar fighting to Secret Scout
Chiyonofuji no Ooichou - Sumo Wrestling game, should be a quick FAQ
Cosmic Wars - Strategy game with most of the translation done
Cycle Race - Road Man - Racing game.
Daisenryaku - Strategy game with translation
Fushigi no Umi Nadia - Strategy with a translation available
Gaiapolis - Action/Adventure game
Golf-kko Open - Golf game
Gyrodine - Shooter
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - 2D Platformer *I ADDED THIS*
Journey to the West - Platformer
Kiteretsu Daihyakka - Platformer
Magical * Taru Ruto-Kun 2 - Similar to SMB3
Magnum Kiki Ippatsu - Think of a light gun game minus the light gun
Metal Mech: Man & Machine - Platformer
Mezase! Top Pro Green Kakeru Yume - Golf
Mirai Senshi: Lios - Strategy game, translation available
Mirai Shinwa Jarvas - RPG, translation available
Namco Classic II - Golf
Nankoku Shirei!! Spy vs. Spy - Similar to the other Spy vs Spy
Parasol Henbee - Platformer with some Japanese, mainly the items in shops
Plasma Ball - Weird sports games with some Japanese stats, all you really need is like 4 words which I'm sure people would gladly translate for you
Sakigake!! Otokojuku - Kind of a beat em up game
SD Battle Oozumou - Sumo Wrestling
Shadow Land - Platformer
Taiyou no Yuusha Fighbird - Shooter with translation available
Tecmo World Cup Soccer - Football or Soccer (depends if you live in the UK or US) *I ADDED THIS*
The Miracle Piano Teaching System - Piano Teaching, may require a special, piano controller *I ADDED THIS*
War in the Gulf - Shooter
Woody Poko - Kind of like an old adventure-ish/platformer game
World Boxing - Boxing game
Youkai Club - Platformer
Zunou Senkan Galg - Shooter

Oh, and I do think that the website for this Completion Project should include games that can be covered by people with no knowledge of any language apart from English.

Yeah, but I would not like to try FAQ a Japanese-language RPG as it will take me ages to figure out where I was supposed to go, and probably even longer to explain it.

As everyone else is doing it, I will also give a progress report on Gyrodine. Got past the ships (quite a lot further, tbh) that are mentioned at the end of the guide and am in the middle of writing down the new enemies and the new part of the game I have reached. Have no idea as to when I will complete it, as I have no idea how long the game is.

If somebody feels like taking Nankoku Shirei!! Spy vs. Spy off my hands, go for it. I have no idea how long it will be before I can get my computer fixed - the repairers are only open week days and I would have to take time off work - very busy at work, so won't be for a few weeks at least. I'll look for another game to FAQ when I finally get a working computer back, as I'm sure I will be able to find something decent.

I think odino mentioned a prototype of this game was available in the previous topic? (Spy vs Spy: The Island Caper) Not sure about this, but sounds like the same game. I can say that you need no knowledge of Japanese for the game - the only Japanese at all is on the title screen in the game name. From the last topic, the Japanese part of the game name translates to "South Country: Foolish Orders" (thanks IceQueenZer0).

Only had a skeleton done of the FAQ, so not like I had done any real work on it. It seems like a very simple game to write a guide for though, for anyone looking for a game to write for - I recommend it.

It would depend on the game. For Final Fantasy 1 (as an example), it would only take an hour or so of running around to figure it out and jot down 'talk to the character in the cave north of the town' in notepad.

I would think that most NES era RPGs are of a similar caliber.

Seeing ASchultz doing Ultima V maps reminds me that the NES port of that game is very different from the computer versions, and thus the FAQ given is invalid. I've submitted a problem report. I presume Andrew's doing a proper FAQ of it anyway. (I apologize to him on behalf of humanity for how bad the port is, BTW.)

Rob
ASchultz | Posted 9/9/2009 4:48:36 PM | message detail
Heh, I noticed the FAQ referred to, err, "bonus" locations and abilities not actually in the NES game. I think the author asked to borrow stuff from my PC guide and slapped on a few NES GameGenie codes and that was it. Thanks for pulling the trigger when I couldn't. I suspect he's long gone and doesn't care, at any rate.

I should have a more comprehensive FAQ up in a few days--just cranking out the maps right now. I can cheat through the game and now I really need to play through more honestly. I know pretty much where to go and it's a question of in what order, and how to build a party efficiently. Plus I'm not sure what to do in Doom--the Apple solution didn't work--so I may need to go talk to everyone in the various towns again.

As for the port being bad--at least the maps are terribly fun to make. I have rough drafts of the under- and overworlds.

Despite the language barrier, a good portion of the remaining games are actually quite simple. A lot of times it just requires menu translations and such to get by. There should be very few games that require complete fluency in the language in order to fully FAQ them (even then, it's nothing a bit of trial and error won't solve). :P

Well, you can cross Gaiapolis off the list tomorrow. For such a seemingly short game (I probably spent maybe six hours writing for it) it was tedious enough to make it take a long time :P. Hopefully it shall get some momentum going on the project again (nothing new since the first?)

A couple of extra notes: please take me off of Mouryou Senki Madara, and sign me up for Daisenryaku.

Also, in regards to those looking for War in the Gulf: a certain Romsite-that-must-not-be-named that literally has just about everything doesn't have it. I had the same issue with Silver Eagle last year, so it's probably an extremely obscure game that just hasn't been uploaded or anything (I am assuming it is unlicensed, too).

Interesting project. Have you thought of doing this for some other console once NES is completely covered?
Games | Posted 9/25/2009 4:01:44 PM | message detail
Every couple of months, a topic will be created to discuss what should be the next console to cover after the NES console is completed. The consoles that are generally suggested are:

Sega Master System - There was a project for this, but more people focused on the NES Project and this kinda died. One or Two users think that it would be more successful if the board focuses on it without any other project to interfere. Could also lead VERY EASILY to a GameGear project.

Genesis - Has a wide selection of games that the SNES also has to allow an easy convergence onto a SNES project, with less Japanese-Only games to contend with. This seems to be the most popular from what I have seen, but I would want the Master System completed first.

SNES - Only successful project so far is it's predecessor, the NES project. Like the other consoles, most of the games are easily accessible and you still have a transition to the Genesis project, if wanted.

GameBoy/GameBoy Colour - It always gets mentioned as another project that failed in the past. Same sort of reasons as the Master System, but it seems to have a bit more support.

Playstation - A very popular console, but obtaining some games may make this project very hard, if not impossible. Cartridge consoles seem to get more support that a Disc console because of the ability to get some rare games easier.

I would love to see the Master System completed personally. The main reason is that it was a major competitor to NES and I grew up with Sonic, Sega and the Master System.

However, this will probably not be discussed to the depths of making an actual decision until the NES project is 100% completed. We do value any help that any user can give for this project (or any game without a guide) and hope that you consider attempting to complete a guide for a guide-less game (on this site).

The FDS isn't an obvious choice. It would have a very narrow band of support. If and when the next project comes along, the systems that Games mentioned are the most probable. Well, excluding the Playstation. This being said, I'm sure a lot of people want to concentrate on rounding off the remaining NES games.

Famicom Disk System = 90 / 199 (45%) = --- = 90 / 199 (45%) = ---

I doubt that Famicom will be done soon, as all games on this site points to JP Only. There is also a high amount of JP Only games for the Playstation, from the looks of it.

SMS has the second least amount of games (Famicom has less, but all are JP), with only 17 of the games left being JP exclusive, 1 of the games being a Korea exclusive, 18 being a South America exclusive and no Asia exclusives. I have also played 1 of the JP exclusives (Solomon's Key), which could easily be converted from the NES version of the game.

Anyway, lets just get the NES project over with before this topic becomes hi-jacked with discussion on what will take it's place.

Really should update my Acorn Archimedes Game List to include the later games I have added to this site.
